Title: Senior Hardware Engineer for HP Labs Palo Alto CA
The Microfluidics and System Technology* at HP Laboratories in Palo Alto California is seeking an outstanding Senior Hardware Engineer to join its elite R&D team working on breakthrough technologies in the life sciences and healthcare. The new engineer will work with a multidisciplinary team of physicists mechanical engineers material scientists chemists and software engineers to drive innovation and progress in both engineering and molecular diagnostics assays. You will leverage your technical acumen desire to learn and handson capabilities to take concepts all the way from prototypes and testbeds to integration into the product. At the Palo Alto site you will work have the freedom and creative license to take calculated technical risks that could lead to significant impacts across the organization.

In This Role Youll Have The Opportunity To:
- Advance the design of microfluidic cartridges and instruments through experiments and modeling while utilizing fundamental principles of fluid mechanics heat transfer and mechanical engineering.
- Design set up and execute experiments to assess and improve assay chemistries for diagnostic tests using fundamental principles of physical chemistry and biochemistry.
- Interact with a larger multidisciplinary team comprising both engineers and scientists as well as marketing and executive teams.
- Design and build test rigs for evaluating engineering design and assay chemistry.
- Provide technical knowledge and datadriven direction to scientific colleagues.
- Work in a Biosafety Level 2 environment and handle a variety of sample matrices and microorganisms.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- PhD degree in a related field (e.g. Bioengineering Mechanical Engineering Chemistry Physics Molecular Biology Biochemistry) from a toptier American university along with a strong academic record and demonstrated excellence in research.
- Demonstrated track record with at least 10 years of experience in designing and innovating in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Ability and desire to perform handson work including running laboratory experiments and test plans assembling complex systems performing analytical measurements and fabricating small prototypes and parts.
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues
- High degree of selfdirection and selfreliance and the ability to formulate and test concepts independently.
- Maintaining detailed experimental records and documents analyzing data using tools such as Microsoft Excel or Matlab and presenting results at internal technical meetings.
- Willingness to work on both engineering design and assay chemistries and a desire to fill gaps in knowledge and skills when necessary
Desirable qualifications include:
- Ability to design and implement control systems and testbeds drawing upon knowledge in firmware software and mechanical design
- Background in using Multiphysics modeling software such as COMSOL or ANSYS
- Experience with the design and manufacturing of small parts using both CAD software packages (ie Creo or Solidworks) and machine shop tools such as mills lathes and laser cutters
- Knowledge of optics and of fluorescence and colorimetric detection techniques for biochemical assays
- Knowledge of physical chemistry from the standpoint of designing and optimizing buffer formulations for biochemical assays
- Designing oligonucleotide assays and implementing methods for multiplex diagnostic techniques

The base pay range for this role is $168650 to $259750 annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to US candidates only). Pay varies by work location jobrelated knowledge skills and experience.
