Job Description

Position Summary

The Opportunity:This position will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and will be required to independently perform semiskilled work in areas such as but not limited to carpentry plumbing electrical HVAC and mechanical for the Facilities department at the Mount Vernon Campus.

This is a fulltime classified position at the Mount Vernon Campus. Hours of work are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.


The Location:Skagit Valley College is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples especially on Swinomish Indian Tribal Community Upper Skagit Indian Tribe Samish Indian Nation Nooksack Indian Tribe and SaukSuiattle Indian Tribe. Located in a geographically diverse region between the dynamic metropolitan hubs of Seattle and Vancouver BC SVC is never far from worldclass outdoor recreation urban arts scenes and local cultural events. SVC serves our local communities with a campus in Mount Vernon Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island and centers in Friday Harbor a Marine Technology Center in Anacortes and a Brewing Academy in Burlington.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance and repair functions

Miscellaneous duties
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies;
  • Pick up campus garbage and deliver to solid waste facility;
  • Move or rearrange classroom furniture and equipment and move and set up furniture for special events;
  • Perform the duties of Maintenance Mechanic for Districtwide projects on an occasional basis;
  • Perform the duties of a Maintenance Custodian when needed.
Administrative tasks
  • Prioritize work orders and complete assignments with minimal supervision;
  • Ensure labor hours are reported on a timely basis for HR processing;
  • Respond to emails check for work orders on Megamation maintenance management software;
  • Navigate a work order management system daily to accurately describe and report labor and material resources utilized.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge or understanding of:
  • Safety standards rules and procedures;
  • Applicable local federal and state building and compliance codes;
  • HVAC and mechanical standard procedures and practices;
  • Principles of HVAC and refrigeration system operations;
  • Basic plumbing codes and standard practices;
  • Basic electrical concepts codes and standard practices;
  • Carpentry compliance codes and standard practices;
  • Painting safety practices;
  • Mechanical work;
  • Routine maintenance procedures.
Skilled in:
  • Performing maintenance and mechanic work; communicating effectively with coworkers supervisors students and staff;
  • Skilled in researching and diagnosing a problem and repairing fixing or solving the problem in a satisfactory manner.
Ability to:
  • Apply appropriate skills in trades such as electrical plumbing HVAC painting etc.
  • Read blueprints and appropriate manuals;
  • Use tools and equipment related to the particular trades.
