Job Description
Basic Function
The current vacancy is in the Public Works Department. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.
GOOD TO KNOW: This role is onsite and has two possible shift times 1. 630am3pm or 2. 8am430pm. This position willbe working out of the Public Works location but it could be moved to either the Parks Shop site or the Keller Shop siteat the discretion of Fleet Management.Fleet Mechanic Fleet Technician is responsible for diagnosing repairing and servicing complex mechanical electronic air hydraulic and computer systems in county vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe and proper operation. Work is performed under direct supervision of the General Supervisor or other Fleet Supervisory staff and is evaluated on repair efficiency adherence to safety protocols use of Fleet Software and procedure application. Other duties may be assigned to the Fleet Mechanic as needed.

- Maintain diagnose and repair all Central Fleet and partner agency/city vehicles and equipment with precision and accuracy.
- Maintain diagnose and repair all nonmobile equipment such as plow blades chain saws pumps conveyors and other equipment used by Ramsey County.
- Maintain diagnose and repair diesel gas and hybrid electric engines and accessory components and replace parts as necessary.
- Obtain and research specification manuals both physically and digitally to better diagnose and troubleshoot Central Fleet and partner agency/city vehicle and equipment.
- Repair differentials and rear end assemblies diagnose failures and replace bearings gears shafts or other worn parts.
- Maintain diagnose and repair transmissions using electronic based diagnostic systems while using digital and/or digital specification documents and replacing parts as necessary.
- Repair electrical systems using VOM & Amperage type meters factory and generic diagnostic software and test lights to include all types of systems found in lightduty and heavyduty vehicles and equipment and replace parts as necessary.
- Maintain diagnose repair and replace brakes steering and suspension systems cut brake drums and rotors and replace broken springs and other parts as necessary on electric hydraulic and pneumatic braking and steering systems.
- Maintain adjust diagnose and repair hydraulic systems; repack hydraulic cylinders and rebuild hydraulic pumps; pressure check hydraulic systems.
- Design cut weld repair and fabricate specialized equipment and/or parts from both formal and informal plans. Fabricate machine parts when necessary for the repair of equipment by welding or using drill presses grinders lathes power saws or boring equipment; fabricate and mount plow hitches and other special equipment. Develop fabrication project options in all types of materials including aluminum and stainless steel.
- Change fluids and filters by mileage hours other time intervals and check vehicle and equipment system functions as provided by preventive maintenance schedules.
- Document and record all repairs parts labor vehicle numbers or other required information related to the repair or maintenance of vehicles and equipment using Central Fleets Fleet Management Software.
- When necessary make recommendations and suggestions for maintenance and repair options by communicating with Fleet Supervisory staff.
- When necessary assist with part sourcing for maintenance and repair activities by communicating and working with Fleet Stockroom staff.
- Conduct emergency field repairs to swiftly restore equipment to operational status or safely return it to the shop for more comprehensive repairs. Perform setup of new vehicles and equipment and any other modifications needed to improve safety efficiency and productivity of purchased units.
- Test and operate all vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation. Perform required safety inspections on all vehicles trucks and equipment including DOT annual inspections.
(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the positions management approved work schedule is required.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school graduation or equivalent AND completion of a twoyear vocational technical program in automotive Fleet Mechanic Fleet Technicians heavy equipment mechanics Turf and Utility Technician Marine Technician Vehicle and Equipment Upfitting and fabrication or a related field.
Experience: Two 2 years of experience in automotive or truck maintenance Turf and Utility Technician Marine Technician Vehicle and Equipment Upfitting and fabrication or related field.
Substitution:An equivalent combination of related education and experience.Certifications/Licensure: Ramsey County will offer training and equipment to help achieve this licensing however the cost of the license is the employees responsibility.Candidates must either have a CDL Class A license or be able to achieve a CDL Class A license as a condition of passing probation. Candidates have 30 days from the hire date to obtain a CDL permit. Positions in this job class are subject to drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules. Testing negative on required test is a condition of employment.

Candidates must either be D.O.T certified as a truck inspector OR must become certified as a condition for passing probation. Ramsey County will pay the fee for this certification.
Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
- Training and Experience Rating 100
The examination for Fleet Mechanicwill consist of a training and experience rating comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions do not mark see resume or see work history as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List:The names of all applicants who filled out a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Fleet Mechanic.This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted informing them that the list has been certified and their status. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.
The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 30 or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consideration.
Veterans Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open competitive selection process. Veterans Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veterans preference should update their veterans DD214 and other supporting documents and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
