Job Description

General Summary

Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates for Lifeguard II who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesvilles Core Values of Commitment Integrity Respect Innovation and Collaboration.

The hiring amount for this position is $19.00 or $19.50 an Hour $39520.00 or $40560.00 Annually).Starting offer is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. This is a fulltime nonexempt position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays plus 1 floating holiday paid vacation and sick leave health insurance options with employer contribution employerpaid life insurance Citys retirement options gym membership reimbursement (up to $34 a month) tuition reimbursement (up to $3000 per fiscal year) and continuing education/training opportunities.This position in the absence of the Seasonal Pool Manager manages the facility and has all of the responsibilities designated for the manager on duty. This includes pool operations staff supervision customer service and pool maintenance. Supervision is exercised over Lifeguard I Customer Service Attendants Instructors and other temporary seasonal positions. Performs responsible semiskilled and routine protective service work in supervising the safe use of public swimming facilities by pool visitors and aids troubled bathers in emergencies; performs related duties as required. Reports to the Seasonal Pool Manager or a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certification in Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission and Waterpark Skills Module is preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Ability to accurately evaluate aquatic situations and facility needs and make recommendations to management; ability to evaluate and communicate effectively with staff and assist lifeguards in improving performance; thorough knowledge of water safety rules and of life saving and first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies preferred; considerable skill and strength in swimming; ability to enforce rules and regulations; ability to remain calm under pressure/stress.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

This position may be required to work weekends nights holidays standby/oncall and/or weatherrelated emergency oncall.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for preemployment reasonable suspicion postaccident and random testing.

Position may require driving a Cityowned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.

The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures extreme brightness chemicals/hazardous waste gases/gas leaks bloodborne pathogens acidic or harsh substances infectious bacteria and/or fumes/airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
