You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe College of Veterinary Medicines Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at Iowa State University in Ames Iowa invites nominations and applications for a fulltime tenure track or clinical term faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor Associate Professor Professor or Clinical Assistant Clinical Associate or Clinical Professor in Molecular Diagnostic Medicine in our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLDaccredited fullservice laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. The caseload is diverse with swine cattle and poultry samples representing the majority of submissions. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide expertise in development and onboarding of new molecular diagnostic assays and troubleshooting current assays. In addition this individual has the potential to serve as coordinator of molecular diagnostic cases submitted by practicing veterinarians and other animal health professionals. The ability to interact communicate and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential. The successful applicant will also be expected to assist in maintaining quality assurance programs.
The position will also have the opportunity to teach veterinary students in both classroom and laboratory settings and mentor graduate students and residents. Research efforts are expected to be mostly collaborative and conducted in cooperation with the ISU VDL stakeholders. Discovery efforts are expected to provide new insight tools applications and/or guidance toward improving the diagnosis control and management of infectious diseases of importance to the Iowa and US livestock and poultry industries.
The successful candidate must have a collegial collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional diagnostic service dedication to all levels of education and contribute to the national prominence of the ISU VDL VDPAM and Iowa State University.
PhD in molecular virology microbiology immunology or related fields
Evidence of success in designing and onboarding molecular diagnostic assays for use in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting
Evidence of experience conducting research on diagnosis pathogenesis and/or molecular epidemiology of food animal infectious diseases
In addition to the requirements above below are minimum qualications at the following ranks:
CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Listed above
CLINCAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: A minimum of 5 years of experience in diagnostic medicine.
CLINICAL PROFESSOR: A minimum of 10 years of experience in diagnostic medicine.
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: Evidence of experience documenting scholarship in the practice of diagnostic medicine or conducting research or other scholarly activity related to diagnostic medicine.
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: An established record of experience and documentation of scholarship and impact in diagnostic medicine.
PROFESSOR: A record of scholarship in diagnostic medicine with national recognition of expertise.
DVM or equivalent degree
At least 2 years of experience in development of molecular diagnostic assays (i.e. primer/probe design for high throughput realtime PCR).
Experience working with highthroughput molecular diagnostic instrumentation automation and robotics.
Demonstrated understanding of production animal agriculture and the ability to capably communicate with food animal centered veterinary professionals.
Experience working in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory setting.
At least 2 years of experience in food animal diagnostic medicine
Track record of collaborative research and/or peerreviewed publications and/or secure extramural research grants/ sponsored research programs.
Experience training students (professional graduate) at various levels.
VDPAM was created in 1997 to strategically grow the resources and emphasis in production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM consists of approximately 55 faculty and 200 staff. Many of our faculty and staff serve food animal agriculture through service units in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Centers Food Animal and Camelid Hospital the Veterinary Field Services unit and the ISU VDL. The ISU VDL provides fullservice highquality diagnostic services including necropsy bacteriology serology histopathology virology parasitology molecular diagnostics nextgeneration sequencing epidemiology and toxicology as well as other analytical services.
