Performs moderately difficult mapping work in preparing and maintaining plans maps tracings and drawings; makes mathematical computations; assists in the review and verification of moderately complex land documents and records and abstracts information essential to determine title to real property; assists in maintaining permanent chronological records including all files and databases; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is the entry level of this series and is distinguished by its responsibility to prepare tracings preliminary plans and maps simple final drawings and maps; assist in the preparation of finished plans; assist in the review of simple land documents to abstract information essential to determine title; interests and land area to real property for assessment purposes; and make mathematical computations under close supervision specific instructions and following established formulae.
Positions in the Tax Maps and Records Technician series are responsible for the maintenance of the Countys tax maps and related land title records. Positions conduct title searches verify land boundaries and analyze land transaction documents to update and/or prepare finished land maps with detail and features of all parcels in the County of Maui.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school with courses in mathematics and/or mechanical drawing and two 2 years of drafting mapping CAD/GIS or land title abstracting experience.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle drivers license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3.
Knowledge of: mathematics including geometry and plane trigonometry particularly as applied to the computations of distances angles and area in the development of maps plans and descriptions; nomenclature and conventional symbols of drafting; drafting practices techniques instruments and equipment; concepts and principles of CAD/GIS; database word processing and spreadsheet programs; legal documents relating to land titles and transactions; sources of information and material relating to land title searches; office practices and procedures.
Ability to: use a personal computer; prepare maps plans drawings and tracings to required scale neatly and accurately from rough sketches preliminary designs or written descriptions; make mathematical computations using trigonometric and circular curve calculations; do freehand lettering and sketching; analyze legal documents relating to land titles and transactions; read and interpret maps relating to land titles; learn the Hawaiian land systems and words and phrases in the Hawaiian language commonly used on land transactions; learn the various operations characteristics and capabilities of CAD/GIS software; learn new software programs; follow oral and written instructions; work cooperatively and harmoniously with other employees and agency personnel; deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

The above examination is being given on an opencompetitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.

PreEmployment/PostOffer Drug Screening Test: All applicants who will enter a safety sensitive position or certain designated categories that the Personnel Services Director has established or who are required by law to be drug tested must pass a preemployment/postoffer drug screening test as a condition of employment. There is no retesting or reevaluation process. Cost for the drug screening test shall be borne by the County of Maui.
