Sr IT Engineer (LMR Land Mobile Radio Support)

Position Summary

Xcel Energy Land Mobile Radio Engineer will be responsible for the design of land mobile radio systems that are comprised of trunked systems in the metro areas and conventional systems in the rural areas. Network backhaul sites vary from metro in building equipment rooms with roof mounted antennas remote sites with a shelter and tower mounted antenna some of these sites are high altitude mountain tops. Dispatch centers exist for Gas Electric and Security operations across all regions. Nuclear generating plants other generating plants wind and solar farms have unique LMR systems and uses. Many facilities have bidirectional amplifiers installed to accommodate radio coverage inside buildings and there are various repeater sites.

Essential Responsibilities

• Engineer projects requiring various technical skills including RF design microwave system analysis RF LMR and BDA design WAN network design and knowledge of Motorola ASTRO systems.
• Final Design approval implementation plan of the radio network including infrastructure subscribers and mobile backhaul networking.
• System staging review. This could include visits to manufacturer production facilities to coordinate system operation and configurations.
• Sign off on system new acceptance testing.
• Review radio coverage testing and interference mitigation.
• Initiate and follow up on radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA) necessary for new sites.
• Preparation and/or approval of system fleetmap encryption and radio programming templates.
• Create review and approve system documentation. Use ArcGIS to document site designs.
• Supervise live system upgrades.
• Travel is required across all Xcel Energy regions. Some travel can be to high altitude and remote sites.
• Solution Delivery: Lead and support solution lifecycle technical activities. Ensure solutions are designed for great user experience and operational performance. Lead design ensuring Enterprise Architecture Security Operations and Compliance aspects are continuously integrated into solutions. Provide input to cost and schedule estimation. Responsible for overall integrity of system design and operation. Oversee vendor activities.
• Relationship Management: Conduct peer reviews and approve system changes and technical solution design. Coach and mentor less experience team members. Partner crossorganizationally to drive minimal costs on optimal solutions. Provide indepth technical information to stakeholders as needed.
• Strategy & Planning: Innovate through usage of industry emerging capabilities and evolving customer needs. Provide input to strategic roadmap and technical dependencies.
• Subject Matter Expertise: Continuously stay current on and apply technical industry knowledge pertaining to the respective domain
• Operations: Review solution performance and continually assess health of systems. Track and drive awareness to operational and technical debt risks. Provide escalated support to incident and problem management. Utilize analytics to improve availability reliability efficiency and capacity. Oversee vendor activities.

Minimum Requirements

• Ten years of related functional experience
• Bachelors degree in Technology Science Business or related field or 4 years of experience equivalent to the position.
• Excellent communication skills effective with varying organizational levels and skill set and able to translate between technical and nontechnical concepts.
• Excellent Relationship Management and collaboration skills with a track record of working as one team crossorganizationally to drive innovation and business results
• Experience/knowledge in radio communication systems radio propagation RF wireless or broadband/LTE.
• Experience and working knowledge in IP networking network design methodologies & troubleshooting (Ethernet TCP/IP L2/L3 MPLS).
• Excellent communications skills and the ability to present complex topics to nontechnical audiences.
• Selfmotivated and able to maintain focus in a pressured environment.
• Expertise managing the lifecycle of technical solutions
• Deep Subject Matter Expertise within the respective system domain products platforms processes and architecture.
• Broad and deep knowledge of technology architecture infrastructure network security and software principles and models
• Experience working in partnership with internal and external vendors.
• Excellent analytical problemsolving and troubleshooting skills
• Extensive knowledge of future technology trends within area of expertise.
• Demonstrated leadership on technical aspects of largescale projects.
• Experience coaching other developers in system deployment or operational troubleshooting.
• Experience with delivery methodologies (Waterfall Agile Scrum) and operational models (ITIL)
• Experience and understanding of core IT Service Management functions such as Change Management and Incident Management

Preferred Requirements

• Previous knowledge and experience working with Juniper Aviat Cisco Nokia/Alcatel Xtreme Ceragon ArcGIS
• Experience with switching and routing protocols (OSPF ISIS iBGP eBGP MBGP
