Job Description:

A Postdoctoral Associate position in Wetland Carbon Biogeochemistry and Microbiome Research is available in the Department of Biology to work on several projects led by Dr. Amanda Subalusky and Dr. Christopher Dutton to begin in Summer 2024.

Candidate must have a PhD in Soil Water and Ecosystem Sciences or a related field. This position will be initially awarded for one year and contingent upon strong performance and conduct and availability of funds may be renewed for up to one additional year.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on the biogeochemistry and ecology of wetlands with a focus on carbon cycling and microbial communities.
  • Investigate the dynamics of carbon storage greenhouse gas emissions and dissolved organic matter quality in wetland ecosystems.
  • Study the composition and function of microbial communities in wetlands including their role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning.
  • Design and implement field and laboratory experiments to assess wetland carbon dynamics and microbial processes.
  • Collect and analyze water and sediment samples to quantify carbon and nutrient concentrations as well as microbial community composition.
  • Use advanced molecular techniques to characterize the diversity and activity of microbial communities from environmental and animal derived samples.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate wetland carbon and microbiome research into broader ecosystem studies.
  • Publish research findings in peerreviewed journals and present results at conferences and scientific meetings.
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in wetland research projects.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in wetland carbon and microbiome research through literature review and participation in professional societies.

Expected Salary:

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in Soil Water and Ecosystem Sciences or a related field with a strong background in wetland biogeochemistry and microbial ecology.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in studying carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions in wetland ecosystems.
  • Proficiency in analyzing water and sediment samples for carbon and nutrient concentrations.
  • Knowledge of molecular techniques for studying microbial communities such as DNA extraction PCR and sequencing.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software for data processing and interpretation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to publish research findings and present at scientific conferences.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to plan and execute research projects independently.
  • Experience mentoring and supervising undergraduate students in research activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research teams.
