Job Description

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning invites applications for a fulltime tenuretrack position at the Assistant Professor level. The position has an anticipated start date of August 2025. We are interested in applicants whose research focuses on GIScience particularly in the use and development of geospatial big data and new spatial analytical methods including spatial statistics GeoAI and remote sensing to address critical environmental and social science challenges. The successful applicant will join a dynamic group of faculty working closely with colleagues in the Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) to advance innovative and interdisciplinary GIScience. As part of ASUs investment in the spatial sciences SPARC members will work to position ASU as a world leader in developing applying and teaching spatialscience techniques lead developments of spatial methods and advance the capacity of GIScience to generate new knowledge and innovative solutions through collaboration across disciplines.

The successful applicant will teach GISrelated courses inperson and online to GIS geography and Urban Planning majors as well as contribute to the PhD program in GIScience. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous externallyfunded research program generate peerreviewed research engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching & mentoring participate in service to the university and profession and build productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.

About the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning:

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) advances the ASU mission and Charter through interdisciplinary research and discovery of public value. SGSUP advances geospatial knowledge for a complex world emphasizing education research and applied solutions to urban and environmental problems. SGSUP houses research centers including The Spatial Analysis Research Center (SPARC) and Urban Climate Research Center (UCRC) and has a recognized strength in human environmental systems urban systems analysis earth surface processes transportation and urban planning. SGSUPs personnel includes approximately 30 tenured and tenuretrack faculty (with multiple members in the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences) nearly 20 careertrack faculty 150 graduate students and more than 800 undergraduate majors. SGSUP offers a PhD program in Geographic Information Science MA and PhD programs in Geography a PhD in Urban Planning an accredited professional Masters program in Urban and Environmental Planning a Masters program of Advanced Studies in Geographic Information Systems and graduate certificate programs in GIS and Transportation. Undergraduates major in geography geographic information science or urban planning and majors and nonmajors alike can obtain a certificate in Geographic Information Science. SGSUP is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of ASU and many faculty are also affiliated with other schools across the university.
