IMPORTANT: SR26 (Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range from $8525 SR26D to $10592 SR26L per month at which appropriate qualified applicants can be recruited).
Performs difficult professional engineering work in supervising and participating in the design installation operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems and/or in the review and analysis of plans and specifications for mechanical engineering features and compliance with code requirements; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Mechanical Engineer IV in that the Mechanical Engineer V is responsible for a number of complex and major projects operating simultaneously where the problems of supervision and/or coordination are pronounced; whereas the Mechanical Engineer IV is responsible for a complex and major project or several less complex projects.

Training and Experience: 1 A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering and one year of registered professional mechanical engineering experience.
License Requirement: Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional mechanical engineer in the State of Hawaii.
Knowledge of: the principles practices methods and techniques of mechanical engineering; engineering mechanics mechanics of materials machine design thermodynamics and hydraulics; basic principles and practices of electrical engineering; principles and methods of conducting a variety of tests on materials and equipment; code requirements as they pertain to mechanical engineering; sources of engineering information; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: apply mechanical engineering principles; interpret apply and modify a variety of guidelines and precedents to the solution of specific problems; review and analyze plans and specifications pertaining to mechanical engineering features; interpret and apply technical provisions of various codes; prepare engineering reports and correspondence; deal tactfully and effectively with engineers architects and the public; give and follow oral and written instructions; plans and review the work of subordinates.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical conditions standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

The above examination is being given on an opencompetitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
