Job Description

STS utilizes the School Spring platform to review and track applications. The platform has recently changed.

Position Summary
A substitute teacher is an individual who in the absence of the classroom teacher is responsible for providing instruction and managing the learning environment. The substitute teacher reports to the principal or designee at the location to which they are assigned.

Job Duties
Day to day job duties of a substitute teacher are determined by the classroom teacher or his/her designee as they may vary depending upon the changing needs of the classroom(s) student(s) and/or school district. Substitute teachers of any capacity are subject to daily reassignment depending on the needs of the day. The substitute teacher must comply with the duties outlined by the classroom teacher principal or designee.

Qualifications and Required Documents

  • A valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certification PA Emergency Certification or Letter of Completion
  • A Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34 that is cleanand less than 5 years old **
  • A Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151)that is clean and less than 5 years old **
  • A FBI Criminal History Recordthat is clean and less than 5 years old **

Please note: clearances cannot be older than 5 years however some districts may require new clearances that are less than 1 year old!

  • Proof of a TB testor chest xray that is less than 3 months
  • 3 professional references
  • A Resume
  • Routing number and account number for direct deposit setup

Letter of Completion Substitute Teacher Service Inc. can hire newly graduated candidates with a Letter of Completion (LOC) in lieu of a PA certificate IF the following information is included in the letter.

  1. The candidate has completed all coursework for the degree program and/or the degree has been conferred.
  2. The candidate has passed all required tests needed for PA certification.
  3. The candidate has been recommended to PDE for certification (thru TIMS).

Please note that the requirements must be stated in past tense. If the above information is not stated in the LOC from a college/university we will need to wait until the PA certificate is made available before hiring the candidate.

Essential Function
Substitute teaching is an essential part of the educational process. Each school year all districts will look to build a workforce of substitute teachers to help aide their teachers and allow them to be replaced in times of need for the district. Each school district will rely on a qualified and enthusiastic group of subs that can stepup and continue the educational process in the absence of a teacher. Its essential that the substitute teacher continues the primary teachers lesson plan so that the curriculum plan at hand continues to be carried out.

Essential duties and responsibilities of this position may vary in nature due to changes in schedule student or district need and include but are not limited to:

Reports to the office upon arrival for checkin and reviews the plans and schedules for the day.
Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about school personnel.
Assumes the responsibility for overseeing student behavior in the classroom during lunch activity periods and outofclass settings.
Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups of students following the absent teachers lesson plans.
Provides instruction to special needs children who are part of the classroom dynamic.
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
Proficiency in maintaining efficient classroom management skills.
Conduct yourself in a polite and professional manner with other staff members and building administrators.
Other duties may be required that are not enumerated here that are part of the classroom teachers curriculum or duties.
