Laboratory and Job Overview:

The Intelligent Molecular Discovery Laboratory (iMDLab https://imdlab) is dedicated to the development of novel computational and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches and their application to rational drug design and discovery. Particularly we are interested in combining data science such as big data curation stateoftheart AI techniques including large language models (LLM) and multiomics studies (cheminformatics genomics etc. to develop more efficacious but less toxic for personalized cancer treatment. As an interdisciplinary laboratory we have been collaborating with experts across the globe in chemistry biology pharmacology and clinical trials to translate our laboratory discoveries to bedside applications and save many patients lives. We have been issued with more than 15 US/international patents and our studentdriven projects have advanced to Phase II clinical trials with publications on Cell Nature and Science.

As a student in our laboratory you will learn about the underlying mechanisms of cancer development progression and metastasis. You will also learn how to develop effective therapies to treat cancer (and other diseases) through integrated efforts of computational modeling structure prediction medicinal synthesis and highthroughput screening. Especially you will learn how to combine the latest AI techniques and experimental studies to develop personalized therapeutic strategies for individual patients.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Learn the latest technologies for drug discovery and development such as molecular modeling ML/AI medicinal synthesis and highthroughput screening.
  2. Work with the PI/mentor and other team members to develop your MS/PhD thesis conduct necessary experiments and execute your projects.
  3. Attend regular group meetings and participate in lab group discussions.
  4. Assist in writing reports presenting results at conferences and preparing/publishing manuscripts in journals.
  5. Assist PI in training undergraduate students high school student interns and other trainees.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A new or continuing University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate student with good academic standing 3.0 GPA or above).
  2. Be a classified degreeseeking student in a Masters or Doctoral program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
  3. Capability to participate in scientific brainstorming write reports/manuscripts and present at conferences.
  4. Strong motivation to become an expert/leader in drug discovery and development.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. For students interested in AI and computational modeling: Strong experience/skills in system administration (especially on Linux) webpage building and webbased application development big data curation and analysis and stateoftheart ML/AI programming and app development. Prefer major in one of the following: Computer Science Engineering Mathematics Physics Data Science or a related field.
  2. For students interested in experimental studies: Strong experience in drug discovery and development organic synthesis biochemical/biophysical assays or highthroughput screening. Prefer major in one of the following: Pharmacy Biology Chemistry or a related field.
