SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:
Due to the Manpower Shortage Recruitment new appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step 5 of the applicable salary range. This is in effect until June 30 2025 or until it is determined that a shortage no longer exists whichever is sooner.

ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY:
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with communitybased clinics DHS cares for about 600000 unique patients each year employs over 23000 staff and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion. Through academic affiliations with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) the University of Southern California (USC) and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU) DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the Countys 911 emergency response system as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Reentry each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

DEFINITION:
Conducts electroencephalographic examinations of patients in clinics wards and intensive care units.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates electroencephalographic equipment to obtain tracings which monitor other biopotential activity such as electromyograms electrocardiograms and electrooculograms by attaching electrodes to standard location on patients head when requested by a physicians order and in accordance with standard procedure.
  • Reads physicians electroencephalographic test requisition to determine which of a number of standard tests are to be performed; explains to patient the need for the examination and procedure involved in an effort to reduce or overcome possible anxiety or reluctance to cooperate.
  • Determines locations to place electrodes on patients head using a tape measure and tables which specify the number and location of electrodes for each type of test in accordance with standard procedure; marks locations on patients head.
  • Attaches electrodes to marked locations on patients head by applying a special electrode adhesive to the skin; ensures that electrode leads are connected correctly by tracing each lead to the corresponding head location calibrates all electroencephalographic recording channels in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Operates electroencephalographic equipment in accordance with training experience and standard procedures to produce tracings for analysis by a physician.
  • Examines tracing tests for artifacts such as those caused by poor electrode contact with patients skin; takes corrective action such as removing and reapplying electrode or replacing broken electrode lead wire.
  • Selects montage to be recorded on tracing by setting appropriate controls on machine in accordance with standard procedure; identifies montage selected by writing on and/or affixing an identifying label on the tracing.
  • Instructs patient to perform an activating procedure such as hyperventilation in accordance with either physicians order or standard procedure; exercises judgment in recognizing when activating event portrayed on tracing has stabilized and tells patient to cease activity; writes brief notation on tracing indicating onset and termination of activity to identify these events for use by a physician in analyzing and evaluating tracings.
  • Observes patient for undesired activity such as blinking of the eyes or leg movement which may produce artifacts on the tracing and notates such activity on the tracing.
  • Removes electrodes from patient at conclusion of examination by applying a special solvent which dissolves the electrode adhesive; obtains information from patient such as present complaint onset and possible contributing factors; notes patient manifestations observed during the examination on worksheet.
  • Performs routine equipment servicing such as cleaning recording stylus ink wells and adjusting recording stylus arms in accordance with standard procedures.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Completion of a recognized training program* in electroencephalograph technology.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out jobrelated essential functions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:

  • Experience in the operation of electroencephalograph equipment in a hospital or clinic subsequent to the completion of a recognized training program* in electroencephalograph technology.
  • Certification** as a Registered Electroencephalographic Technician T. issued by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).
PHYSICAL CLASS III Moderate:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending stooping squatting twisting reaching working on irregular surfaces occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds and frequent lifting of 1025 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*A recognized training program is defined as: A program or curriculum that is accredited or approved by a national or regional accrediting agency commission or organization.
In order to receive credit for the completion of a training program you must attach a legible copy of the official certificate official diploma official transcripts or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specializationat the time of filing or via email to within 7 calendar days of filing your application online.

Provide the title of your required certificate the certificate number date of issue date of expiration and the name of the issuing agency for the required license as specified in the Selection Requirements ORapplicants must attach a legible photocopy of the certificate issued at the time of filing or within 7 calendar days. All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon application information desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire weighted 100.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70 or higher on the examination in order to be added to the Eligible Register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on anas receivedbasis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve 12 months following the date of eligibility.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve 12 months.
