Assists Veterans and family members within the Harris County Veteran Services Department Justice Involved Program. Role will mostly be inside county jail to provide coordinated care efforts for Veterans identified as high risk for recidivism homelessness substances suicide and other crises. Further assist the Veteran and family members through reentry planning and strategies in efforts to reduce recidivism. Coordinates care through community partners such as Veteran Affairs Harris Center etc. to connect individuals or families with benefits counseling mental health housing legal or other necessary resources as needed. Completes followup with Veterans and works to ensure they follow through with next step reentry plans; goal is to get Veteran back on their feet.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Respond to Veterans who are currently inside or recently released from incarceration to create reentry planning and use of resources; primary goal is to reduce recidivism and crisis situations
Assess document educate and complete referrals for Veteran clients who are in need of stability planning by case management and coordination with community partners for; mental health treatment housing legal assistance food and other needs
Referrals to stabilization such as: SSVF and GPD housing programs and substance treatment programs
Educate Veterans about their benefits and complete referrals to the VBA/VSO team request needed documentation for clients to include DD214s NG22s and other vital records through community partners to increase the Veterans quality of life upon release
Assist and screen incarcerated Veterans helping them with their exit planning to include making referrals to the Veteran Treatment Court for Veterans who qualify
Likely to transport those released
May participate in community outreach events
Performs other jobrelated duties as assigned

Experience:
Has worked with Veterans and understands military culture
Experience and knowledge of Veteran resources with genuine desire to care for Veterans
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Great personality with a can do attitude able to work independently and flexibly
Able to handle intense situations and display sound judgement and good decisionmaking skills
Must have strong commitment in clients rights to selfgovern and create their own choices and goals while also being an advocate for them
Able to work on a diverse team using strong interpersonal skills collaborative work style and oral/written communication skills
Able to work with a diverse population and without bias towards people regardless of age ethnicity race religion veteran status gender/identity or socioeconomic background
Must be computer literate with MS Office (Word Excel PPT etc. and Internet proficiency
Must be able to successfully pass the CPR and AED certification and administer to those in need
Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of ones duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices

Prefer Associate Degree/Bachelors Degree in Social Work Counseling or related field from accredited college/university
Preferred understanding of the legal system
Experience working directly with Veterans and government/nonprofit organizations who focus on Veteran concerns or issues
Peer to Peer Certification
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
NonExempt/ Regular
Typical hours are from 8:00 am 5:00 pm Monday Friday
Some Weekends and Reverse Schedule when performing crisis intervention (some evening phone calls) or weekend events
Work Environment:
The work is mostly in an office or outside environment
Will be occasional local travel to complete job functions training meetings
Veteran crisis response/followup etc.
No special safety precautions are required
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 50lbs
Must be able to stand for more than 7 hours a day
Must be able to handle hot and humid conditions
Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
