Job Description

Department Information

The English program of the Department of English and World Languages offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in English English with Creative Writing Emphasis and English with Secondary Teaching Endorsement. Minors are offered in English and Creative Writing. The English program also contributes undergraduate general education courses in rhetoric and writing literature speaking and listening and creative writing. The Department of English and World Languages is dedicated to upholding the universitys vision by providing interdisciplinary education and is committed to the academic success of each student.


Description of Job

This is a ninemonth position with the potential of summer teaching for additional compensation. Responsibilities include teaching 12credit hours per semester. Teaching assignments are based on department needs and candidates areas of expertise. These teaching assignments may include courses such as Rhetoric and Writing I and II Introduction to Technical Professional Writing Introduction to Creative Writing Public Speaking and other courses in our program. Proficiency with instructional technology is expected. Rhetoric and writing lecturers participate in ongoing professional development initiatives conference with students provide oneonone feedback to students attend program meetings mandatory training and other related events as necessary.

The successful candidate will have a desire to teach and mentor students who have been historically marginalized and underserved. The person in this position should have a strong sense of collegiality and a willingness to participate in a unified and lively department.

Primary Duties

  • Teaches a 4/4 load according to program needs and candidates area of expertise. Teaching expectations for titled faculty are outlined in our faculty handbook 2.8.5. They include:
    • command of ones subject;
    • ability to organize subject matter and to present it clearly logically and imaginatively;
    • knowledge of current developments in ones discipline;
    • ability to relate subject matter to other areas of knowledge;
    • ability to provoke and broaden student interest in the subject matter;
    • ability to utilize effective teaching methods strategies and appropriate technologies.
  • Contributes to student success through support and mentoring including meeting for office hours conferencing with students and providing oneonone feedback.
Ancillary Duties
  • Participates in ongoing professional development initiatives attends program meetings mandatory training and other related events as necessary.

Salary Range:
$41000 to $42000 per ninemonth academic year. Additional compensation may be available for summer teaching.

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.A. or MFA in English or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to and commitment to serving diverse populations and learners.
  • At least one year of collegelevel teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success teaching at the college level.
  • Experience teaching rhetoric and writing courses at the college level.
  • Experience teaching creative writing and/or public speaking courses.
  • Experience writing and publishing poetry or creative nonfiction.
  • Experience as the sole instructor of different writing courses.
  • Experience teaching and/or designing facetoface online and hybrid courses.
