DEFINITION

*EXTRA HELP* LABORER
Department of Aviation California Redwood Coast Humboldt County Airport

The County of Humboldt Department of Aviation has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team! As a Department of Aviation employee you will work in an environment with other motivated individuals who are passionate about their work.

What Youll Do:

Department of Aviation positions perform minor maintenance and repairs on airport buildings facilities equipment and vehicles. Operate and maintain variety of vehicles and equipment such as trucks forklifts pumps and power and hand tools.

Where Youll Do It:

This position will be located in McKinleyville California at the California Redwood Coast Humboldt County Airport (ACV).

Supplemental Information:

  • Prior to appointment successful candidates will be required to pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 10year criminal history background investigation.
  • This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for Extra Help positions.
  • This is a continuous recruitment and Human Resources reserves the right to close this recruitment at any time.

DEFINITION

Under direct supervision performs light and heavy semiskilled manual labor for a variety of County maintenance projects.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a semiskilled class with incumbents performing a variety of duties involving manual labor on County maintenance projects. Positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines from which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in nonroutine circumstances.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties if assigned to Road Maintenance:

  • Assists County road crews to break and remove surfaces; digs shovels hauls loads and unloads soils sands asphalt mixes and other materials.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools related to the work including jackhammers pavement breakers and tampers.
  • Operates a variety of small trucks and light construction equipment.
  • Assists in repairing and maintaining culverts ditches and drainage structures; excavates and clears roads and ditches.
  • Assists in traffic monitoring and control including the flagging of vehicles and the distribution of signs and safety cones.
  • Performs brush clearance tree removal and control work.
  • Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to work and uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Maintains basic records of daily work performed.
  • Performs related work as required.

Duties if assigned to Facilities Maintenance:

  • Moves and maintains office furniture and equipment.
  • Sets up and removes furniture for meetings.
  • Sets up and removes furniture and other miscellaneous items for clients as needed.
  • Makes repairs on doors windows floors lockers gates roofs and ceilings.
  • Oils and replaces chair casters; recovers desk tops; lubricates drawer slides.
  • Constructs new walls ceilings and flooring.
  • Installs new plugs on electrical appliances.
  • Maintains facility grounds; performs mowing and basic grounds keeping picks up trash.
  • Unstops drains and toilets.
  • Assists custodial staff in maintaining clean work and office areas.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting wallpapering or staining.
  • Applies paint to building interiors and exteriors fixtures and equipment.
  • Prepares and paints or stains cabinets doors woodwork and other surfaces.
  • Orders parts and materials as directed.
  • Maintains an inventory of necessary cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Keeps accurate and timely records of building maintenance activities.
  • Uses computerized/electronic equipment as required.
  • Makes deliveries.
  • Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools.
Skill in:

  • Safely operating a pickup truck or assigned vehicle.
  • Maintaining routine records of work activities.
  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing maintaining and fostering positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Performing heavy physical labor.
  • Using and caring for tools supplies and materials required in the work.
  • Using computerized/electronic equipment as required.
  • Reading and understanding blueprints construction drawings and schematics.
Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California drivers license.
  • Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to sit stand walk kneel crouch squat stoop reach crawl twist climb and lift heavy objects up to 100 lbs; exposure to noise outdoors confining work space electrical hazards mechanical hazards heavy traffic in addition to other workplace hazards.
Desirable Education and Experience:

  • A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is: Sufficient formal and/or informal education to assure successful job performance and some fulltime work experience.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six 6 months but could be up to one 1 year. All designated safety employees serve a oneyear probationary period.

If you are offered employment you will be required to verify your eligibility to work in the United States. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Workerrelated training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
