Job Description

Overview: 

The AbbVie Combination Product Development (CPD) organization provides design and development expertise to enable drug delivery systems for AbbVie pharmaceuticals. The Human Factors Center of Excellence (HF CoE) within CPD manages the drug delivery device user interface design process and executes usability assessments required to support the successful regulatory submission of AbbVie Combination Products. In addition to supporting the development of combination products the HF CoE provides human factors engineering support for all AbbVie products requiring such support including oral presentations medical devices and software as a medical device.

We are looking for an individual with academic training and professional experience in human factors or a related discipline to lead Methods Excellence initiatives within the HF CoE. These initiatives may include research activities to answer questions that will aid the design and evaluation efforts of the HF CoE across different products and which may also cover aspects of the patient experience that are evaluated within a clinical context.

Overview of Position:

This role is intended to support the Methods Excellence focus of the HF CoE. This individual will work alongside AbbVie HF CoE team members as well as crossfunctional partners to plan and execute research activities. This individual will disposition findings of research activities into actionable tools to support the HF CoE and crossfunctional development teams. The successful candidate will be a recognized human factors expert capable of driving functional performance by designing and implementing research aimed at answering key questions to better understand the user and patient experience.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements the HF CoE Methods Excellence strategy in alignment with HF CoE functional goals and scientific objectives.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary experts within the HF CoE to integrate scientific objectives into human factors and patient experience research activities. Such activities will answer key questions that will aid in product development.
  • Forges relationships with internal partners beyond product development teams for planning and executing research.
  • Sources and identifies emerging scientific trends and HF industry best practices from multiple sources and assesses relevance. Integrates learnings into functional shortterm objectives and research plans. Shares knowledge with the HF CoE and CPD.
  • Advances scientific expertise within the HF CoE and CPD beyond direct area of disciplinary expertise. Proactively advises and shares knowledge and expert opinions with others. Mentors and trains functional colleagues and assesses current and emerging industry challenges enabling functional goal achievement.
  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major research activities within the HF CoE through sound design early risk assessments and implementation of fallback strategies.
  • Applies imagination and innovation by creating inventing and implementing new or better approaches alternatives and breakthrough ideas that are valued across disciplines by customers within the function.
  • Presents scientific concepts and results for functional scientific and nonscientific leaders as well as potential and existing partners. Maximizes impact and value of expertise.
  • Maintains an internal reputation as a cross disciplinary expert.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with thirdparty human factors research suppliers to understand unique measurement capabilities for user experience aspects such as injection force and time and how such capabilities could be used in research. Identifies potential new partners if a capability gap exists among existing partners.
  • Supports as needed human factors engineering activities for crossfunctional development projects including performing task analyses defining user interface requirements designing user interface elements such as IFUs planning and executing usability studies and defining human factors strategy as part of project core teams.

Qualifications :

*This position is required to sit onsite 3 days / week*

  • Bachelors degree in human factors or related field with 18 years of related work experience; masters degree in human factors or related field with 16 years of related work experience; PhD in human factors or related field with 10 years of related work experience.
  • Proven ability to innovate with a history of new or improved product releases.
  • Interacts well with diverse groups within function and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
  • Excellent written and spoken communications skills.
  • Ability to work with a variety of disciplines and teams in fastpaced environments.
  • Strong problemsolving and analytical skills.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical or medical device product development is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of medical devices and medical device regulations and standards is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
