Student Intern Fall 2025

The United States Probation Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina is currently accepting applications for a parttime Student Intern for the 2025 Fall term. This position will be filled as permitted by budgetary constraints. Probation Interns provide support to probation officers and are located in the Greenville Raleigh or Wilmington offices. This position is a WhenActuallyEmployed (WAE) appointment. There is no predetermined work schedule. Work hours are determined by the students school schedule and the supervisor. Compensation is based on the actual hours worked.

The Student Intern performs duties and responsibilities which include but are not limited to the following:

• Assists officers with running criminal history checks through local and national databases and files as well conducting inquiries with collateral agencies. Investigates a defendants employment sources of income etc. Conducts database searches compiles information and enters data/information in the offices database systems.
• Assists with preparing and processing reports forms and documents ensuring consistency and accuracy among forms reports and other paperwork. Proofreads and edits documents for accuracy proper grammar and spelling for signature by the officer or supervisor.
• Observes court hearings and officer meetings with defendants and/or persons under supervision.
• Assists with administrative duties such as scanning shredding copying and greeting visitors in person and/or on the telephone.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify for the position an individual must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must be currently enrolled as a parttime or fulltime student pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work criminal justice criminology psychology sociology human relations prelaw political science English or related field of study. Proof of enrollment must be provided. Candidate must have at least a 2.9 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and must be able to commit to 1216 hours per week in 4hour blocks of time between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Candidate must possess excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines. The successful candidate must also possess word processing and scanning/file imaging proficiency; the ability to work harmoniously with others in a teamoriented environment; and have a thorough knowledge of spelling punctuation grammatical usage and exceptional customer service skills. Candidates must demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

The student intern must possess integrity good judgment initiative and the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds. The selected candidate must conduct themselves in a professional manner which includes respecting confidentiality being punctual maintaining a professional appearance and maintaining a professional relationship with clients and staff. Preference will be given to upperclassman and/or individuals whose schedule allows them to commit to larger blocks of time.

Judicial Branch employees are considered at will employees and are not subject to the employment regulations of competitive service. Salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) for payroll deposit is required.
