The Department of Corrections Division of Institutions is recruiting for an Education Coordinator for the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) located in Nome Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:
The successful applicant will oversee the programs department at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center under the supervision of our PO 3. They will engage in providing innovative educational programs within our facility. They will be working with a culturally diverse offender population and need to recognize and respond to lifestyle and value differences. This encompasses program development and design coupled with making curriculum for offenders education in the areas of Adult Basic Education General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Life Skills Vocational Education and PostSecondary Education.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
Your office classroom and library are in the secure side of the facility. Security staff are available but not located inside your area as you work with both male and female offenders from minors to all ages of adults sentenced and unsentenced.

Who We Are Looking For:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Computer Skills: Uses computer software applications databases and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Express information (for example ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example technical sensitive controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentation; listen to other attends to nonverbal cues and responds appropriately.
  • Teaches Others: Helps others learn through formal or informal methods; identifies training needs; provides constructive feedback; coaches other on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor.
  • Flexibility: Is open to change and new information; adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information. Changing condition or unexpected obstacles; effectively deals with ambiguity.
  • Physical Strength and Agility: Ability to bend lift Climb stand and walk for long period of time; ability to perform moderately heavy laboring work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited college in education counseling social or behavior sciences or a closely related field.
AND
One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant and similar classes with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a yearforyear basis.

Special Note:
An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants.

Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending crouching walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels vibration dust dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including but not limited to Prison Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. EDUCATION

If postsecondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications you must fill in the Education section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree please indicate the number of units completed. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application or provided at the time of interview at the discretion of the hiring manager.


SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION

Education completed in foreign colleges universities or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the postsecondary institution or high school. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.


WORK EXPERIENCE

If using work experience in your Applicant Profile you must also provide the employers name your job title dates of employment and whether full or parttime. Applicant Profiles will be reviewed to determine if the responses are supported and Minimum Qualifications are clearly met. CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS

Please be aware this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.


FINGERPRINT NOTICE
