The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
Under supervision fabricates assembles and installs structural metal components for use in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment machinery buildings public structures and appurtenances; performs related work.
Lays out jobs working from blueprints shop drawings samples and written descriptions
Makes patterns and templates as required. Prepares material by cutting drilling forging burning
welding brazing or such other metal work process as may be necessary to fabricate the component
Assembles and attaches fabricated components to structures or equipment using hand and powered
tools such as welding brazing and burning equipment as may be required.
Does rigging as required.
Performs specialized and structural welding
Does necessary preparation and finishing as may be required.
Lubricates equipment as required.
Operates motor vehicles including heavy trucks to transport equipment
Is responsible for and directs the work of assigned personnel
Maintains records and makes reports as required

METAL WORK MECHANIC 91225
Qualifications :
1. Five years of fulltime satisfactory experience as a journeyman/journeywoman metalwork mechanic blacksmith or welder in fabricating installing and metalworking plates structural shapes or other metal components; or
2. At least three years of experience as described in 1 above plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational schooling.
License Requirements
1. A valid Welders License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings and certified for Class I Shop and Field.
2. A Certificate of Fitness Type G38 or Type G95 Torch Use of O2 Combustion Gas issued by the New York City Fire Department.
3. A Class C Commercial Driver License with a Hazardous Materials endorsement and no restrictions that would preclude the performance of Metal Work Mechanic duties valid in the State of New York.
