Job Description

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) is made up of every undergraduate student at the University of Nevada. ASUN provides a means for students to voice concerns and address issues at the university local state national and international levels.

Responsibilities

The duties of the Director of IDEA are as follows:

  • The Director shall chair and oversee the Department of IDEA

  • The Director shall chair and oversee the Diversity Advisory Board composed of representatives both on and on campus that represent diverse segments of the community

  • The Director shall develop relationships with and meet regularly with leaders ranging from but not limited to multicultural religious and social justice related student organizations

  • The Director shall provide advice and recommendations to ASUN officers to create a more inclusive environment within the Association

  • The Director may delegate any of the Directors functions to any other officer employee or organizational unit of the Department

  • The Director shall serve as an exofficio nonvoting member of the Senate Committee on IDEA and may designate a different officer of the department to attend and serve in that capacity in their absence

  • The Director shall present a new appointment to the Senate within the following two weeks of said committee or Senate meeting. If an executive appointment is reported unfavorably by the Senate committee on Oversight if an appointee is not passed by the Senate or if Director is unable to find a qualified candidate within two weeks the Director must present to the Committee on Oversight and explain the circumstances

  • The Director shall meet at least once per semester with the Universitys Chief Diversity Officer

  • The Director shall appoint members of the Department to serve as liaison to the Center for Cultural Diversity Disability Resource Center Veterans Services Office of International Students and Scholars USAC McNair Scholars Deans Future Scholars Gear Up and TRiO Scholars and First in the Pack

  • Oversee the planning and coordination of said events

  • Serve on university committees relating to campus diversity and inclusion

  • Convey to the Senate of the Associated Students information and data related to the status of minority student enrollment and participation in campus activities

  • To have a report read or spoken into record at minimum every other Senate meeting

  • Responsible to attend all ASUN retreats and trainings as decided by the President and the Director of Executive Outreach

  • To chair and oversee all meetings of the Department of IDEA which must occur at least once per month with an agenda posted in accordance with Nevada Open Meeting Law.

Required Qualifications

During my tenure in this appointed position I agree to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada Reno

  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 7 undergraduate credits

  • Perform all duties and instructions outlined by the ASUN Governing Documents

  • Uphold the Nevada Student Code of Conduct

  • Meet all deadlines set forth

  • Attend all required meetings and training

  • Work scheduled hours

  • Properly complete and submit HR paperwork on time

  • Assist in the promotion of the mission of ASUN and Nevada

  • Behave in a manner that is ethical maintaining a high level of integrity

  • Other duties as called upon by my position

I understand if I do not adhere to the items outlined in this agreement or what is stated in the ASUN Governing Documents my position may be subject to disciplinary action by the ASUN Judicial Council and/or the University of Nevada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fields such as sociology social justice ethnic studies gender studies psychology education political science or related social sciences fields through course of study previous work experience or extracurricular activities

  • Previous management mentorship or leadership experience with peers

  • Prior event planning and budgeting experience either through previous work experience or extracurricular activities

  • Demonstrated involvement in initiatives or organizations focused on promoting inclusivity diversity and social justice

  • Knowledge of IDEA (Inclusivity Diversity Equity and Accessibility) principles frameworks and best practices with an understanding of systemic inequities and intersectional identities

  • Proficiency to lead a cohesive team

  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with politically ideologically and culturally diverse people and communities

  • Excellent organization and project management skills in a teambased environment with multiple projects

  • Flexibility and adaptability within role; ability to time manage and prioritize tasks

  • Willingness to mentor an intern during the fall and spring semesters

  • Commitment to advancing the foundational pillars of the Home Means Nevada Platform through:

  • Conducting direct outreach initiatives climate surveys and focus groups to understand and support underrepresented groups

  • Sponsoring events through the Multicultural Center and student coalitions such as the Multicultural Greek Council to build visibility and grow spaces for communitybuilding and activism

  • Developing strong connections with the Center for Student Engagement and other campus departments to increase awareness of student resources to promoting accessibility and student belonging

  • Highlighting identitybased communities on campus and in the local community consistently and throughout the academic year

  • Advancing initiatives for continued ADA and physical accessibility infrastructure improvements

  • Expanding understanding of institutional policies and procedures related to diversity equity and inclusion including recruitment and retention efforts for underrepresented groups

  • Working with the President to establish and administer the IDEA Grant program by managing application review funding allocation and support for studentled initiatives focused on inclusion diversity equity and accessibility

  • Working with the President to coordinate a crosscampus Student Advisory Board composed of students from underrepresented communities professional organizations and identitybased groups to provide guidance on ASUN policies and projects

  • Advising the Presidents Cabinet on best practices for inclusive leadership and IDEAfocused policy while actively participating in policy planning and crossdepartmental collaboration with entities like Government Affairs and Sustainability
