*** Applicants seeking shortterm or parttime work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructionaltype positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for fulltime employees and up to 1 calendar year for parttime employees.

Other Conditions: Casual Hire temporary appointment is expected to begin May 2025 or soon thereafter. Not to exceed 89 days.

Duties:

  1. Comanages with the Animal Sciences faculty and (or) farm manager the UHH animal species which include but are not limited to beef cattle swine equine meat goats and hair sheep.

  2. Provides supplemental instruction and demonstrates procedures in onfarm laboratory sessions.

  3. Assures suitable and sanitary living conditions care medications and records that comply with UH System Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regulations.

  4. Comanages with the farm manager all fence and gate systems used by UHH livestock including constructing maintaining and inspecting daily. Repairs or replaces defective fences and gates to assure herd safety and containment and vermin exclusion.

  5. Comanages with farm manager construction and maintenance of all farm barns pens lagoons farrowing houses arenas offices and storage areas used by the animal sciences community to assure a safe and clean working and living environment.

  6. Supervises student assistants assigned to Animal Sciences students engaged in projects and (or) research activities involving livestock and volunteers to ensure all work is done efficiently correctly and safely.

  7. Operates tools machinery and equipment common to farming operations in a safe and correct manner. Examples: tractors trucks trailers forklifts chain and hand saws tillers mowers eaters carpentry power tools sharpening tools etc.

  8. Obtains University of Hawaii Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) certification to assist with implementation and development of approved animal care protocols.

  9. Assists in maintenance of some horticultural areas beehives and bee garden. Willing to learn handling bees and processing hives.

  10. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Agricultural or Animal Sciences or equivalent education training or experience in herd management livestock health and nutrition and compliance with regulations related to animals and facilities.

  2. Strong understanding of principles practices and techniques in Animal Sciences particularly in livestock and equine production.

  3. Ability to interpret and produce written documentation reports and procedures effectively.

  4. Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals teams and organizations.

  5. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  6. Possession of a valid U.S. Drivers License

  7. Capability to operate (or willingness to learn) common farming tools machinery and equipment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Familiarity with Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) protocols.

  2. Experience working with animals in a university setting.
