Job Description
- Valid Class A CDL without air brake restriction with tanker endorsement must be obtained during probationary period & maintained thereafter.
- The selection process for this position will include a structured interview. Candidate responses to the interview questions will be scored and the selection will be made in accordance with the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.
- This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards.
- All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one 1 year probationary period.
- The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. An individual assessment of an applicants prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
- All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which prohibits the use of including medical . Medical is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test for final applicants in this position.

The opportunity to work on an important missionOfficial Position Description:
Performs major overhauls of gasoline &/or diesel engines or leads repairs most difficult & complex agencyidentified equipment problems (e.g. replacement or repair of pistons rings crank shafts medium & heavyduty automatic transmissions; single & twin counter shaft manual transmissions).Provides onthejob training to lowerlevel ODOT mechanic(s) & mechanic trainee(s) in accordance to ODOT Mechanic Training Program (e.g. identifies training needs for ODOT mechanics based on skill level & equipment operation complexity identifies skills & knowledge for program instruction); works with agency training administrators on program &/or content delivery (e.g. attends pilot training courses makes recommendations for changes makes recommendations for additional training needs course content & developmental opportunities).
D iagnoses troubleshoots replaces &/or repairs electronic systems (e.g. engine control modules antilock brake systems medium & heavyduty automatic transmission control modules electronic sensors); reflashes control modules (e.g. engine transmission body) using scan tools laptop computers & available software repairs systems using up to date diagnostic equipment; identifies troubleshoots repairs & calibrates hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications; evaluates & makes recommendations on mechanic related software.Repairs rebuilds &/or replaces minor & major parts (e.g. electrical system components alternators water or fuel pumps clutches brake systems snow plows salt spreaders liquid antiicing systems paving/milling equipment); adjusts valves & performs preventive maintenance & service on vehicles & equipment; performs miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g. body repair work; repairs or replaces tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors); provides service & repair of vehicles & equipment on emergency basis.
Schedules maintenance &/or repairs of equipment; maintains repair or service records; attends training schools; updates shop manuals & parts books; operates welding equipment (e.g. acetylene torch MIG welding equipment) to heat shape & weld machinery & equipment; operates computer to enter edit & retrieve data from computer systems; performs inventories of machinery & heavy equipment &/or orders & picks up parts & supplies; cleans garage area equipment &/or tools; mows grass; operates equipment snowplows &/or tow truck.
Evaluates damage to vehicles or equipment (e.g. automobiles trucks tractors back hoes) determines materials needed & repairs damage (e.g. dents scratches rust erosion wrecked parts) by pounding brazing applying putty or fiberglass material sanding cleaning &/or painting damaged area & by operating hand & power tools (e.g. drills sanders gas & electrical powered arc welding tools grinders acetylene torches) & paint spray gun.
Removes repairs replaces &/or adjusts doors windows electrical equipment bumpers &/or minor engine parts; installs signs seat covers lights brackets sirens flashers logos &/or identification numbers on vehicles; removes repairs &/or replaces interior upholstery parts; cleans & washes vehicles.
Cleans repair shop; logs work performed; orders &/or picks up parts &/or supplies; operates forklift; prepares estimates; verifies outside cost estimates; inventories parts; maintains repair records; retains salvaged parts for resale or reuse; oversees maintenance & cleaning of body shop & equipment.
