Job Description

PD Instructor: PD for ELA Teachers in Grades 68 Comprehension Strategies

DESCRIPTION:

The professional development session for ELA teachers in Grades 68 on Tuesday September 2 2025 will focus on Comprehension Strategies that can be incorporated when using the Amplify ELA Curriculum. Comprehension strategies will be highlighted.

Strategies and skills that should be highlighted include:

  • Critical thinking: for close analytic reading of both narrative and expository text
  • Main idea skills: categorizing information and vocabulary identifying main ideas at the paragraph level and identifying central ideas in lengthier text
  • Text structure knowledge: at the sentence paragraph and longer text levels
  • Topdown topic webs: a graphic organizer that represents the major topics and big ideas of any content that is read said or done
  • Twocolumn notes: a note taking format that supports active reading and listening
  • Summarizing: students comprehend and synthesize the main ideas from any content that is read said or done
  • Generating questions: students create and answer questions along a continuum of thinking using Blooms Taxonomy based on content that is read said or done
  • I We You instruction: strategies are taught explicitly through modeling and think aloud guided practice is provided and scaffolds are gradually released as students become independent users of the strategies
  • Cooperative learning: students learn and practice comprehension strategies by working in cooperative pairs or small groups

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and implement a professional development for all middle school ELA and inclusion teachers in grades 68 on comprehension strategies using the Amplify ELA curriculum.
  • Create an agenda goals and deliverable outline for the session by June 10 2025.
  • Collaborate with the K8 Director of ELA and Literacy regarding materials and expectations for the session.

WORKING TIMES/DATES/MODALITY:

The presenter will be allotted up to 24.5 hours to plan the presentation. Planning will take place between April 2025 and July 2025 asynchronous and synchronous checkins with the K8 ELA/Literacy Director.. A draft of the presentation and deliverables will be due by June 10 2025. Any edits that need to be made to the presentation will be done on or before August 16 2025. The Professional Development Session will be Tuesday September 4 2025 from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and will be held at one of the Elementary Schools in Everett that is still to be determined.

REMUNERATION:

$40/hr based on 24.5 hrs of preparation time for a total of $980.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Massachusetts teacher certification
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a 68 ELA classroom
  • Knowledge of Common Core Frameworks
  • Possess a deep understanding of literacy and the importance of rigor and high expectations in a classroom
  • Familiarity with Webbs Depth of Knowledge Wheel
  • Experience using the Amplify ELA curriculum

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in Education and/ or Reading Instruction/Literacy
  • Current EPS employee
  • Has facilitated professional development in the past
  • Has used Amplify ELA curriculum with fidelity and with skillful differentiation for at least two years
