Job Description

POSITION: Secondary Diploma Science Curriculum Coach

LOCATION: Central Office

The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools 28 elementary schools 7 middle schools and 5 college and career academies/high schools we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56 Hispanic 24 African American 9 White and 6 Asian. To serve our students the district employs approximately 4000 employees including more than 1800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:

The job of a Curriculum Instructional Coach (Science) is for the purpose/s of providing support to the curriculum and instruction process with specific responsibility for providing information and serving as a resource to Instructional Coaches and teachers with an emphasis on secondary Science; developing Instructional Coaches and teachers to function at high levels as demonstrated by practice and student achievement data; support Instructional Coaches and teachers in the implementation of the districts instructional model and the District Continuous Improvement Plan that results in the achievement of the districts indicators of success. This position will begin work during the 2024/2025 school year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates master knowledge of content pedagogy and coaching particularly in secondary Science.
  • Serves as content and instructional specialist including thorough knowledge of the KansasScience (HGSS) Standards.
  • Provides leadership as a member of a collaborative team to ensure that curriculum and instructional initiatives are student focused and aligned with the Districts mission and vision and within the MultiTier System of Supports (MTSS) framework.
  • Understands and deploys best practices in curriculum design and management in collaboration with the curriculum department.
  • Utilizes effective and researchbased culturally responsive coaching practices.
  • Develops instructional coaches and teachers to improve secondaryScience classroom practice through the use of datadriven decisions planning for learning and implementation and analysis of impact resulting in higher levels of student achievement in secondaryScience classrooms.
  • Coaches instructional coaches to supportScience teachers in the areas of effective instructional practices reflective thinking and lesson design connected to data.
  • Responsible for developing and supporting a culture of reflective practice to build the capacity of all instructional staff members in implementing rigorous inquirybased instruction.
  • Uses principles of adult learning and effective facilitation in the planning and implementing of professional development (inservice and classroom embedded).
  • Designs and delivers professional development (Building and District inservice embedded and Professional Learning Communities) in collaboration with the other Curriculum and Instruction team members and other departments.
  • Leads the process of selecting and obtaining resources aligned to Science standards.
  • Ensures alignment of the vision for Science curriculum and instruction across all levels.
  • Leads in developing effective assessment and instruction in the secondary Science classroom.
  • Collaborates in crosscontent alignment within each grade level and across courses.
  • Supports the integration and use of technology as an instructional delivery and learning tool.
  • Participates in the development of online course offerings for our educational community.
  • Assists buildings with the management and ordering of materials.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information clearly and accurately.
  • Demonstrates high levels of proficiency in leadership behaviors and professional deportment.
  • Ability to work with and contribute to a team.
  • Ability to work a full day in the location or locations assigned.
  • Physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about as needed in the fastpaced highly intensive school environment.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 35 years effective teaching experience preferred as evident by favorable references portfolio and evaluations.
  • Experience as an instructional coach as evidenced by student achievement data and other impact data included in a professional portfolio.
  • Masters Degree in Education or related field (or plan of study on file and active progression to complete degree program) in an agreed upon timeframe.
  • Maintains Kansas Teaching License in appropriate content area and level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more content areas.
  • Demonstrated effective coaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective instruction resulting in students meeting or exceeding standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The flexibility of schedule for occasional evening and summer work.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports general curriculum and learning theories correspondence and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators staff parents students and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit walk stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of the job the employee occasionally may visit a childs home. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and depth perception.

COMMUNICATION:Maintains communication with teachers other school personnel to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.

ORGANIZATION:Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation.Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.Performs other related work as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Is directly responsible for students safety work output and wellbeing.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students peers parents and community; to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:186 days with an extended contract for additional days. Flexible daily and yearly schedule established by the Executive Director of Diploma College and Career Instructional Programs based on a regularly reviewed work plan.
