Haverty Family Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
The Ward Family Heart Center at Childrens Mercy Kansas City is the premier highvolume pediatric heart program in the Midwest. Our focused interdisciplinary care of children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease brings to bear the expertise of boardcertified pediatric cardiologists congenital cardiothoracic surgeons cardiac intensivists anesthesiologists and advanced practice pediatric critical care nurses. Our facilities include a new state of the art Cardiac Intensive Care unit in 2021 and the most advanced technology available for diagnosis treatment and translational research for our patients who range in age from fetal to young adult.
As a member of the Heart Center team the Cardiac ICU(CICU) APNs will work to provide 24/7 coverage to all high acuity cardiac patients in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit. This includes but is not limited to single ventricle patients transplant patients patients requiring mechanical circulatory support and ventricular assist devices postoperative patients acquired heart disease and post cardiac catheterization patients. In this team structure CICU APNs provide direct patient management which includes participation in patient rounds ordering/interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures analyzing and prioritizing complex data developing differential diagnoses and implementing plans of care. These tasks will be completed with direct collaboration with a boardcertified pediatric intensivist. The CICU APN is expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families working well with physicians and physician trainees being a resource to nursing staff and collaborating with multiple subspecialities that function in the Cardiac ICU. Additionally the CICU APNs collaborate with the CV surgeons on postoperative care including but not limited to incisional management removal of chest tubes and pacer wires and wound vac therapy. We are looking for candidates who have a passion for the fastpaced environment of the cardiac intensive care unit and an enthusiasm to grow their advanced practice career caring for the pediatric cardiac population.
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse provides comprehensive evidencebased advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic psychosocial and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The newer APN participates in beginning leadership evidencedbased practice/ research and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APN mentor and through the APN fellowship program.

Qualifications
- Acute Care PNP Required upon hire
- Masters Degree Required and 12 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a casebycase basis within preferred specialty.
- DNP preferred and 12 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a casebycase basis within preferred specialty.
- Licensed RN MO Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
- Licensed RN Kansas Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
- RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
- APRN KS Advanced Practice Registered Nurse KS APRN license in Kansas Required Upon Hire
- APRN MO Advanced Practice Registered Nurse MO APRN documentation of Recognition in Missouri Required Upon Hire
- APRN board certification congruent with population and practice setting (see policy statement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Roles and Practice Setting) Required Upon Hire
- Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
- Specialty Certification relevant to units patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
