Job Description

Anticipated Everett Alternative High School College and Career Counselor

Description:

The Alternative High School College and Career Counselor is responsible for utilizing researchbased strategies to counsel and engage diverse groups of students in grades 912. The counselor is responsible for providing individual and group academic advising and career counseling services to students enrolled in the Everett Alternative High School.

The College and Career Counselor role is critical to the success of our Alternative School for overaged undercredited High School Students. They must work collaboratively with the EHS counselors and Department Head Alternative School faculty and the Assistant Principal/Supervisor to continually improve the experience career and college outcomes of our students. The College and Career counselor must be flexible and willing to meet the individual scheduling needs of students within the Alternative School schedule. They must exercise culturally responsive practices to promote equity and respect for all students.

The College and Career Counselor will collaborate with faculty families EHS counselors and administrators to support students academic and socialemotional wellbeing while attending EAHS. Additionally the counselor will develop with each student their own MyCAP tracking students career exploration and college and career readiness activities and supporting postgraduation planning. The counselor will work with students aged 1622 to ensure they are adequately supported and can complete their courses explore career options and graduate.

The College and Career Counselor is expected to facilitate groups daily aligning with MASCA school counseling standards.

Working Time: 9:30am4:30pm Monday through Thursday 8am3pm on Fridays

Location: Everett Alternative High School

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in counseling and/or related field
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Certification as Guidance Counselor or as School Adjustment Counselor for Grades 912

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Masters Degree in counseling or related field
  • 3 or more years experience as school counselor school adjustment counselor or related field
  • Experience working in an urban public school setting with high school students
  • Proficiency in reading writing and speaking in another language in addition to English.
  • Strong growth mindset flexibility and collaborative skills.
  • Experience working in Workforce Development or Youth Programming.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of and demonstrated ability to connect with the ethnic background of students and families served.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and families to support program access and effectively address areas of concern.
  • Familiarity with mental health theory and evidencebased practices.
  • Knowledge of case management services including making referrals to external community resources including referrals to student services and filing 51(a) reports.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Adapt and manage priorities under changing circumstances and timeframes.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist students with setting academic college and career goals utilizing SchooLinks MyCAP and other relevant resources or platforms as assigned.
  • Provide responsive services to address academic social and emotional concerns.
  • Assist with student scheduling and registration processes.
  • Work to create a culture of perseverance and improvement that is welcoming to all students and families.
  • Work with administration to uphold and support all school policies and procedures.
  • Assist in developing advisory programs and curricula to support students college and career goals.
  • Assist in special projects as assigned by the Assistant Principal/Supervisor..
  • Attend teambased meetings to support student progress toward graduation and college and career readiness including formal career training programs.
  • Communicate with students families regularly using culturally responsive strategies that promote twoway conversations.
  • Collaborate with outside and partnering agencies including community college and employment partners.
  • Monitor student attendance including calls home texts emails and home visits.
  • Employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development related to the challenges of urban education in order to close opportunity gaps.
  • Collaborate with staff to support students social emotional and mental health needs.
  • Contribute to schoolwide initiatives and events as assigned by your supervisor/assistant principal including onetoone and group checkins with students school events daily student advisories recognition ceremonies and communitybuilding activities.

Salary:

Salary for this position will be based on the Everett Teachers Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
