Job Description

In partnership and collaboration with Rural Action and Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps The Dawes Arboretum is actively recruiting two 2 highenergy Seasonal AmeriCorps Members to assist our Learning & Engagement department with summer programming efforts.

If you are passionate about The Arboretums mission and are a servant leader who sees the importance of educating others on the benefits that trees plants and wildlife have on our environment we want to hear from you!

Seasonal AmeriCorps members will focus on assisting Arboretum staff with sessions of Camp Dawes a summer day camp serving youth aged 614. The seasonal AmeriCorps members will help facilitateageappropriate programming games crafts and other recreational activities during camp sessions on topics such as nature art plants trees plantinsect interactions environmental awareness water and more.

(Camp training will be provided.


Other responsibilities include:
  • Assisting Learning & Engagement staff in leading all camp sessions.
  • Assisting in implementation and creation of new engagement activities such as themed regular Nature/Learning Walks Wagon Tours etc.
  • Assisting Learning & Engagement Educators with PopUp exhibits.
  • Serving as a naturalist at high traffic areas of interest to answer questions point out interesting natural phenomena and take interpretive/education materials (posters activities identification books specimens etc. and include a wide range of materials to gain interest from people of all ages; adults families and children.
  • Serving as a role model and maintaining the health safety and welfare of the children attending Camp Dawes.
  • Assisting in Discovery Center activities and turtle care.
  • Participating in training and conferences as necessary to increase knowledge and gain career networking opportunities.

Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have commitment to The Arboretums mission core values and policies; be enthusiastic creative industrious responsible punctual; and have a genuine love for children.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software packages and general computer skills are required.
  • An ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • The position requires working with community members volunteers and speaking in public settings.
  • Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (including heat cold insects etc. and be able to carry 40 pounds.
  • Must have own transportation and valid drivers license.
  • Education or work experience in horticulture natural resources environmental education interpretive education or early childhood development is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in the field of environmental studies biology natural resources or another closely related degree program.

Schedule:
Usual hours of service will be MF during regular office hours of 8:00am4:30pm. Members must also be able to serve flexible hours including some evenings and weekends. Hours may fluctuate.
  • Middle of May through middle of August
  • Monday through Wednesday (Full days for Camp)
  • Thursday or Friday
  • One weekend day (half days)
