Position Description:
For the Principal Research Scientist I or II position we are seeking a highly motivated experienced analytical scientist to lead a small team of analytical scientists supporting early phase development of small molecule New Chemical Entities (NCEs) drug substance and drug product in both preclinical and clinical programs.
The candidate should have extensive expertise in applying regulatory guidelines within an R&D environment with a fit for purpose mind set. The candidate will need experience in analytical control strategies analytical method development characterization validation release and stability testing.
He/she should be able to perform research along with directing research and/or project activities by effectively mentoring guiding and/or supervising scientific personnel. Should conceive execute and communicate novel multidisciplinary research or development strategies that achieve project and strategic goals. Serve as an analytical project lead scientist on projects and contribute scientific insights into multiple other projects and initiatives.
He/she must foster productive collaborations within the global Analytical R&D organization and with R&D crossfunctional partners such as PreClinical Safety Process Chemistry Process Engineering Drug Product Development Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery Quality Assurance and CMCRegulatory.
Responsibilities:
- Mentor/supervise a team to support the development of NCE candidates (RSM to API to DP) from preclinical through Phase II clinical trials and accountable for the effective performance of the team/individuals.
- Responsible for method development testing procedures and implementation of analytical control strategies to help the advancement of drug discovery candidates.
- Apply analytical separation and detection modes for complex impurity profiling of pharmaceutical products.
- Generate new scientific proposals and lead those efforts. Anticipate and critically evaluate scientific or regulatory advances or competitive threats and respond with appropriate new strategies.
- Utilize understanding of a range of analytical techniques to conduct research and development studies related to smallmolecule drug products active pharmaceutical ingredients intermediates starting materials impurities and impurity profiling.
- Routinely demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in research or development activities and maintain a high level of productivity in the lab.
- Embraces the ideas of others nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality.
- Encourage ideas and drive for continuous improvement and champion initiatives within Analytical R&D and across R&D partner functions.
- Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
- Understand and comply with AbbVie safety quality and regulatory policies and government regulations.
Qualifications :
- Bachelors Masters or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry typically with a minimum of 14 (BS) 12 (MS) or 6 (Ph.D. years related industry experience.
- Demonstrated peoplemanagement experience.
- Strong technical background in analytical chemistry excellent analytical problemsolving skills. Capable of independently developing and troubleshoot analytical methods.
- Demonstrate creative out of the box thinking to solve difficult problems and
- Champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
- Hands on experience with HPLC analysis and method development along with fundamental understanding and working knowledge of various analytical techniques including Dissolution MS GC and NMR.
- Selfmotivated hardworking detailoriented individual able to work in a fastpaced team environment.
- Experience in the use of computerized data handling systems.
- Highquality written and oral communication skills and ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.
- Learns fast grasps the essence and can change course quickly where indicated.

- This is an onsite opportunity located in AbbVies campus located north of Chicago.
- The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
