Job Description
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applicants to apply for a tenuretrack Assistant Professor position in the Visual Communications VIS department to begin Fall 2024. The successful candidate will primarily teach game design. Expertise in character design and 3D game design focused on playercentered design solutions with strong visual direction and interaction design preferred. The main responsibility is to teach Esports and gaming design. The ideal candidate should specialize in at least one of the following areas: Game Experience Design Interaction Design 3D Design Character Design The successful candidate will need to demonstrate potential for conducting academic scholarship or producing industryrelated creative activity that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department the Newhouse School and Syracuse University is expected.
Responsibilities
Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Visual Communications majors and the Esports program with students on the Game Experience and Design track as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the industry. The person in this role will also have the opportunity to teach and/or develop elective courses based on their expertise/background. The person in this role will teach five courses per academic year. Tenuretrack professors are expected to pursue activities that will position them as a wellknown expert in their field. The Newhouse School offers a variety of financial support that allows professors to pursue their scholarly endeavors. In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties including academic and career advising of undergraduate students school and university committee service departmental curriculum development and assessment and community/industry outreach. This position has a start date of August 2024.
Qualifications
Previous teaching experience is a plus but not required. A masters degree is required. Candidates must have significant professional experience in the practice of design as a game designer design researcher UX designer interaction designer experience designer or illustrator. In addition they should have knowledge and experience of: market research and target audiences basic programming skills/concepts basic 3D asset and environment creation scripting languages (C python blueprints etc) evidence of successful game development/engineering/designing and launch They should also have knowledge and practice of accessible and inclusive design practices.
