Assistant Principal Sunset School

We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Assistant Principal to join the leadership team at Sunset School one of two schools that serves students in grades 36 within the Coos Bay School District. Our new administrative team member will work closely with thebuilding principal and staff to foster an environment where students thrive academically and socially. Emphasis will be placed on supporting literacy initiatives particularly through Oregon Response to Instruction and Intervention (ORTIi) along with schoolwideimprovement efforts focused on attendance behavior support and student engagement. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for improving student outcomes and contributing to a positive inclusive school culture.

Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership: Collaborate with the principal and teaching staff to implement best practices in literacy instruction particularly through Oregon Response to Instruction and Intervention (ORTIi) to improve student reading outcomes.


School Culture and Climate: Foster a positive school climate that promotes high expectations for academic achievement student behavior and attendance. Lead efforts to improve schoolwide attendance and behavior interventions.

Student Support and Management: Utilize MultiTiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for academics and behavior ensuring all students receive the appropriate support to succeed.


Parent and Community Engagement: Build strong partnerships with families and the community to support student success.


Staff Development: Work with teachers and staff to ensure quality professional development and effective instructional practices including teacher evaluations.


Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze student data including attendance and behavior trends to inform decisions and create improvement strategies.


Program and Compliance Oversight: Ensure compliance with Oregon state laws including special education 504 plans and Federal programs such as Title 1 Title IX and Title X.


Education & Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Must hold or be eligible for an Oregon Administrative License with experience in staff supervision curriculum and instruction assessment and educational reform.

Desired Qualities:

  • Experience: Requires 35 years of experience in teaching or leading an elementary school with expertise in literacy instruction particularly within the Oregon Response to Intervention (ORTIi) framework.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Ability to work collaboratively with staff yet make decisive datadriven decisions for school improvement.
  • MTSS Expertise: Experience with MTSS in academic (literacy and math) and behavioral contexts specifically for striving students.
  • Teacher and Staff Evaluation: Familiarity with evaluating teacher effectiveness and providing feedback to improve instructional practices.
  • Behavioral and Attendance Supports: Demonstrated ability to lead schoolwide efforts to improve attendance and implement effective behavior support and management systems.
  • Positive Behavior Management: Training in Collaborative Problem Solving and NonViolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) is highly desirable.
  • Special Education and 504 Knowledge: Experience with special education and 504 plans.
  • Oregon State Laws & Federal Programs: Knowledge of Oregon school laws and regulations as well as Federal grants and programs such as Title 1 Title IX and Title X
  • Elementary Mathematics Leadership: Demonstrated knowledge of elementary math content standards and ability to lead standardsbased instruction.Experience implementing elementary math curriculum with fidelity. Proficiency in using adaptive math software to support differentiation and intervention. Ability to analyze and interpret math assessment data (universal screeners benchmark and progress monitoring) to inform instructional decisions. Supports PLCs in identifying essential math standards pacing guides and formative assessment practices. Encourages a schoolwide math culture that emphasizes conceptual understanding procedural fluency and realworld application.
