Assistant/Associate/Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology

About Fort Smith and the Arkansas River Valley
Fort Smith is a vibrant community of around 90000 with a low cost of living and ample recreational opportunities. Located in the beautiful Arkansas River Valley at the foothills of the Ozark mountains Fort Smith is nestled between the OzarkSt. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. The region provides hiking mountain biking rock climbing hang gliding whitewater rafting and camping all within a short drive. In addition the city supports a variety of cultural attractions including museums theaters an awardwinning symphony and two historic entertainment districts.
JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant/Associate/Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology will drive support and ensure the integration of scientifically based biomedical sciences and osteopathic principles and practices in the training of students in the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM) and other programs within the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE). This hire will be integral in further developing a curriculum which integrates multiple basic science fields in teambased large and small group learning environments. The faculty member will engage in innovative scholarship and research to advance medical knowledge and provide training opportunities for ACHE students. Dedication to achieving ACHEs mission through regional and national service is an area of focus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Direct the education and instruction of students including fostering and cultivating the overall learning environment by mentoring students in educational endeavors that encompass research scholarly activity classroom instruction active learning groups and laboratory experience.
  • Participate in the assessment and evaluation of students and provide feedback and remedial assistance to ensure that the students of ACHE meet the standards established by the faculty and college and obtain the knowledge skills and competency required.
  • Participate in curriculum development assessment and modification as part of the colleges ongoing quality improvement and assessment program.
  • Maintain office hours for student advising tutoring remediation and consultation as specified by ACHE.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and willingness to assist the college in fulfilling its mission and vision through teaching or other professional endeavors and actively participate in service.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior in all aspects of personal and professional actions and performance.
  • Maintain an ongoing personal and professional development portfolio including documentation of teaching professional development activities and plans service provided to college and communities scholarly activity and research to assure personal growth and continued competency with specialty field of Biochemistry or Cell Biology.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (PhD) in Biochemistry or Cell Biology or a closely related field.
  • Demonstration of successful teaching experience as an instructor or course coordinator/director of a relevant scientific discipline at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Sustained productivity and contribution (e.g. presentations publications patents etc. to a relevant professional field.
  • Possess skills necessary to contribute to the advancement of a Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at ARCOM.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience in a biomedical research setting.
  • For Assistant Professor two 2 years academic experience as a fulltime faculty member at a College of Osteopathic Medicine College of Allopathic Medicine College of Health or Allied Sciences. Appointments at the Associate Professor level will require six 6 years previous experience as Assistant Professor. Appointments at the Full Professor level will require six 6 years previous experience as Associated Professor.
  • Excellent leadership and administrative skills established track record of mentorship and experience in medical and/or graduate education.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of courses in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience in teambased learning approaches to instruction.
  • Demonstrated achievement(s) integrating the basic sciences from research or educational endeavors.
Required knowledge skills and abilities
  • Familiarity with the delivery of Biochemistry and Cell Biology content in the classroom through a variety of modalities.
  • Passion to mentor and motivate students and peers.
  • Willingness to learn new approaches for content delivery and their implementation.

  • May be exposed to short intermittent and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include but not limited to pens pencils calculators computer keyboards telephone etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices conference rooms and on occasion to offcampus sites to attend meetings conferences workshops seminars etc.
  • May require significant travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.
