Assistive Tech / Augmentative and Alternative Communication Specialist
40 hours/week MondayFriday 189 days/year Beginning 202526 school year
Position will be based at the Twin Knolls Building Bend OR
Starting: August 27 2025
Salary Range:As established by bargaining agreement 202526 Licensed Salary Schedule (based on experience and education).

Definition Under general supervision the Augmentative Communication Specialist provides consultation and evaluation in the area of augmentative communication to identified students with severe communication disorders in the seven counties served by Central Oregon Regional Program (CORP) High Desert ESD.
Qualifications Requires a MA/MS in Speech/Language Pathology preferably with a Certificate of Clinical Competence (or CFY in process) through the American Speech and Hearing Association. Also requires licensure through Teachers Standards and Practices Commission or Oregon State Board license per Administrative Rules and Oregon Statues. Minimum of two years experience working with teachers parents and staff providing evaluation direct service and consultation to orthopedic impaired developmentally delayed and/or multihandicapped in the area of speech and language. Experience with augmentative communication or general assistive technology is helpful. Employee must be interested in learning about augmentative communication. Must have access to reliable transportation and consistent attendance required.

Performance Responsibilities
- Ability to evaluate students to determine their need for augmentative communication
- Assist district speech and language pathologists to assess the communication skills of the students
- Consult with teachers special education staff educational assistants parents peers and speech language pathologist to share communication interaction strategies and provide knowledge of different systems that are available
- Assist teachers parents and speech language pathologists in planning programs and developing Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives related to augmentative communication.
- Assist in implementations of augmentative communication programs to meet IFSP/IEP goals
- Develop augmentative communication programs with team input to be implemented by parents teachers educational assistants or speech language pathologist and train appropriate personnel
- Assist teachers other specialists educational assistants parents and speech language pathologist in planning vocabulary for communication boards books and dedicated devices
- Work with occupational and physical therapists on appropriate positioning for the augmentative communication user and collaborate with them to assess the best means to access communication system (e.g. use of switches)
- Assist teachers parents and other staff in setting up appropriate access methods for computer use and programs for students
- Develop and monitor inventory of augmentative communication equipment for loan to districts EI/ECSE and families
- Monitor and report student performance and progress
- Monitor augmentative communication programs using observation data and/or pre/post testing
- Work cooperatively and communicate appropriately with teaching and support staff
- Order use and maintain appropriate materials and equipment
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as directed
- Complete required reports IFSP/IEPs and other forms promptly and in an acceptable manner

- Understand and apply current concepts methods and procedures in speech language development and augmentative communication devices

- May be required to bill for Medicaid reimbursement dependent upon licensure and specific services provided within the scope of the position

Terms of Employment A contract renewable annually by the Board of Directors under the terms and conditions of the statutes and administrative rules of the State of Oregon conditioned upon successful evaluations and the employees maintenance of a current valid teaching credential. Salary and benefits are established by policy and collective bargaining agreement.
