Background
The Department of Management part of the triple accredited Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (Education focused) in OB/HRM. This role forms part of a wider investment into the Schools academic excellence and commitment to setting new global standards in responsible business one future leader at a time. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join us and make significant contributions to the education excellence of our university.
The Department of Management plays a significant role in a researchintensive Business School by carrying out worldleading research translated into innovative cuttingedge teaching in relevant subject areas that is original significant and rigorous. Our intention is to be recognised internationally for research and teaching that is of the highest quality and delivers theoretical and empirical insights that are agendasetting and have a major impact on the economy policy and society not least through our students.
The Department of Management has a collegial culture with over 90 faculty organised across four subject groups: Business Economics and Policy; Entrepreneurship Leadership and Innovation; Organisation Work and Employment; and Procurement and Operations Management. Research networks flourish within and across subject Groups with research centres situated in the Department across the School and connected to the Universitys Institutes for example Interdisciplinary Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The Department has a strong and supportive research culture with regular seminars reading groups and a healthy PhD programme. Early Career faculty are particularly supported with developing teaching and research.
The post holder will become a member of the Organisation Work and Employment (OWE) subject group within the Department of Management. The Group contains wellestablished research strengths in the broad disciplinary areas of organisation studies human resource management employment relations and political economy. Expertise areas include contemporary issues for the future of work (such as flexible working the gig economy decent work/quality of work and pay) employment regulation comparative political economy industrial strategy regional policy and labour markets responsible business employment relations equality diversity inclusion and workplace wellbeing human resource management knowledge skills and human capital and trust at work. The Group teaches organisational behaviour organisation studies human resource management and employment relations across undergraduate and postgraduate and professional training programmes. We have new specialist MSc programmes being developed including a new MSc in Human Resource Management launching in September 2022 a major redesign of the MBA and Distance Learning Programmes and a crossSchool hub for business analytics education providing opportunities to enhance scholarly leadership in relevant topic areas.
Role Summary
You will contribute to a range of educationrelated activities. In addition you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
You will be expected to advance teaching and learning practice in your modules within the school take a role in leading curriculum development and play an important role in student academic and pastoral will deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by disciplinebased research.
Management and administration are likely to include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer enterprise business engagement public engagement widening participation schools outreach or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.
