Job Summary:
The Assistant for the Alternative Instruction Program plays a crucial role in supporting the program coordinator and ensuring a safe and productive learning environment for students participating in the alternative instruction setting. This position provides direct support to students assisting with academic focus behavior management and safe movement within the school. The ideal candidate will be patient understanding and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Student Supervision and Escorting:
    • Escort students to and from designated areas within the school including classrooms offices and other locations as directed by the program coordinator.
    • Maintain visual supervision of students within the alternative instruction setting and during transitions.
    • Ensure student safety and wellbeing at all times.
  • Academic Support and Redirection:
    • Redirect students who are offtask or exhibiting disruptive behaviors guiding them back to academic focus.
    • Provide basic assistance with academic tasks as directed by the program coordinator.
    • Encourage students to engage in their assigned work and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Behavior Management Support:
    • Assist the program coordinator in implementing behavior management strategies.
    • Deescalate potentially disruptive situations through calm and respectful communication.
    • Report student behavior concerns to the program coordinator in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Program Support:
    • Follow the direction of the program coordinator and adhere to established program procedures.
    • Assist with the organization and maintenance of the alternative instruction classroom.
    • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and behavior as directed.
    • Communicate effectively with students staff and administrators.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Experience working with adolescents particularly those with behavioral or academic challenges is preferred.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Patience understanding and a positive attitude.
    • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
    • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in challenging situations.
    • Must pass a background check.
