Job Description

Director of School Counseling SY25/26

Burlington School District

Burlington School District (BSD) is accepting applications for a passionate and energetic Director of School Counseling to join the Districts dynamic administrative team. The Directordevelops and maintains an effective and efficient school counseling program and services which support and encourage students to make the most of the educational opportunities available to them within and outside of Burlington High School. BSD Directors

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Establishes and maintains a program of guidance and counseling services for BHS students and staff including an annual schedule of services and events;
    • Supervises supports and evaluates all BHS Counseling Department and support personnel including School Counselors the Registrar the School Data Manager the Counseling Department Assistant the School Social Worker the School Mental Health Counselor and other positions as appropriate;
    • Develops appropriate annual school counseling department goals and budget consistent with high school and district longrange goals;
    • Schedules and conducts weekly counselor meetings for the BHS counseling staff and oversees inservice professional development;
    • Oversees the development of grade appropriate programming including rising ninth grade orientation for students and parents career and postsecondary planning for all students and presentations responsive to school and world events.
    • Coordinates student awards night and graduation with the principal ensuring accurate and appropriate distribution of awards and the awarding of diplomas;
    • Serves as spokesperson and helps to coordinate school counseling services K12 in the school district.
    • Provides general school counseling services to a reduced caseload of students;
    • Supervises the preparation of reports records and other paperwork required and appropriate to administering the school counseling department;
    • Coordinates the submission storing and reporting of student grades/credits to families and others;
    • Oversees the proper evaluation of student records to assure that graduation requirements are met by all BHS graduation candidates;
    • Oversees the collection maintenance dissemination and destruction of the student education records of all present and past BHS students including the review of all records before they are disseminated;
    • Oversees the master scheduling process in conjunction with the principal;
    • Develops and implements the course development orientation and selection process and timeline for all high school students including those rising from 8th to 9th grade;
    • Revises edits and publishes the annual BHS course description booklet (Opportunities in Education);
    • Assists the principal in developing the master academic schedule and processing
    • student course selections;
    • Develops and implements a registration process for students entering BHS at the throughout the school year including over the summer months and makes necessary schedule changes for students;
    • Provides administrative support for school district and community programs;
    • Attends and participates in appropriate area state and regional guidance and counseling meetings and conferences;
    • Maintains good relations with all BHS departments and participates in the weekly administrative team leadership meetings; Serves as the liaison with the Burlington Technical Center the Center for Technical Education Eagle Bay Academy and other educational entities;
    • Coordinate and oversee state and precollege testing as needed;
    • Develops and maintains working relationships with community agencies to support student referrals;
    • Assists the middle school principals with the supervision and evaluation of their counselors and support staff as needed;
    • Attendance in accordance with established days/hours of work.
    • Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent BHS Principal or their designees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Job Requirements:

    • Masters Degree in School Guidance and Counseling.
    • Licensed or eligible for Vermont Educators License.
    • Endorsement as a School Counselor 61 or eligible for Vermont Provisional endorsement.

Required Qualifications:

    • 5 years of successful experience as a high school counselor.
    • Preferred: Successful classroom experience.
    • Experience with School Improvement and Transformation.
    • Experience and knowledge of Restorative Practices.
    • Experience effectively working with culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
    • Training and/or experience with group facilitation and process management.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the role and duties of a Counseling position.

Preferred Attributes / Skills:

    • Ability to lead counsel and supervise a variety of personnel and programs.
    • Strong decisionmaking analytical and organizational skills.
    • Ability and interest in direct and effective communications.
    • Ability to improve instruction and increase student learning.
    • Ability to define problems and formulate alternatives and arrive at solutions when information and/or objectives are ambiguous.
    • Ability to decide among alternative uses of limited resources.
    • Planning and organizing abilities.
    • Ability to handle the complications of authority power and dependence with subordinates.
    • Ability to supervise and manage instructional and support staff within existing agreements.
    • Skills in the area of program and performance evaluation.
    • Effective conflict resolution skills (Equity lens necessary).
    • Skilled facilitator and presenter.
    • Strong Interpersonal skills.
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
