WHO WE ARE

As an AtLarge Democrat Councilmember Glassrepresentsall 1.1 million residents of Montgomery County and is the first openly LGBTQ member of the County Council. A former CNN journalist Councilmember Glass actively uses social media to connect with constituents explain complex policies and share the stories of our diverse communities.


WHO WE ARELOOKING FOR

Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass isseekinga strategic creative and digitally savvy Communications Director to lead the offices communications and public engagement efforts. This is a dynamic role for a strong writer and storyteller who understands how to use digital media to drive conversations build community and elevate progressive policy work at the local level.

What Youll Be Doing


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Councilmembers digital communications strategy including daily management of content across social media platforms.


  • Draft compelling accessible content including press releasesbi weeklynewsletters social media posts talking points proclamations opeds and more.


  • Produce and edit videos graphics and photography to support policy storytelling and public engagement.


  • Monitor news and public conversations relevant to Montgomery County andidentifyproactive communications opportunities.


  • Respond to media inquiries and coordinate press events and interviews.


  • Work closely with the Councilmember Chief of Staff and legislative team to ensure messaging reflects the Councilmembers values and policy priorities.

Minimum Qualifications


Experience:One 1 year of progressively responsible experience in legislative/policy research or professionallevel experience preferably with a background in communications.


Education:Graduation from an accredited college or university with aBachelors Degree.


Equivalency:An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.


Preferred Criteria Interview Preferences


All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified placed on the Referred List and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Referred List as a Transfer candidate and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:


  • 3 years of professional work in communications and earned media preferably in elected officials office public affairs community engagement advocacy or a related area.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a clear active voice and strong attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated experience creating social media content that drives engagement and tells a story.

  • Proficiencyin digital content tools (Canva video editing apps/platforms etc..

  • Knowledge of or interest in Montgomery County issues including housing transportation equity education and the environment.

  • Ability to work in a fastpaced environment meet deadlines and collaborate with a small hardworking team.

  • Availability to attend occasional evening and weekend events.
