TITLE: School Health Care Aide/ Teaching Assistant

SUPERVISOR: District Nurse Building Administrator(s)
JOB SUMMARY: The School Health Care Aide provides educational and medical support to students under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and district nurse and the broad supervision of the building principal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Provide assistance to students to help develop their independence.
- Assist in carrying out lessons to students as arranged by the teacher including working with students on an individual or small group basis.
- Adapt and accommodate students academic programming in general education classes as developed by the special education teacher.
- Follow each students individual behavioral plan as well as the classroom behavior management plan.
- Provide for special needs of individual students including lifting hygiene and restroom assistance if necessary.
- Promote and model responsible respectful and safe behaviors as well as meaningful interactions with and between students.
- Record and compile data monitoring academic and behavior programming.
- Record and maintain all necessary medical documentation as directed by the district nurse.
- Participate in staff team/collaboration meetings as assigned.
- Report any unusual student behaviors to the teacher or administrator.
- Maintain strict standards of student and family confidentiality.
- Receive necessary medical training specific to individual students.
- Assist students in learning to manage any appropriate medical needs.
- Support the development of individual medical plans for students in collaboration with district and building administrators and students families.
- Communicate with parents/families regarding the students health status and communicate with the classroom teacher about all other educational needs.
- Perform all other duties and tasks assigned by the special education teacher as they relate to individual students or the classroom.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Must meet all requirements for the position as designated by the ISBE; Paraprofessional Certificate or 60 hours of college credit are required AND/OR
- Relevant medical training and experiences to legally support the specific medical needs of students
EXPERIENCE
- Two years of schoolbased experience is preferred
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Highly organized
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Excellent problemsolver
- Should be able to work with students with a history of behavior or learning problems. Proven to work under pressure and can prioritize multiple tasks
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Student Contact Days and other days stipulatedon the work calendar in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

- This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
- This is a nonexempt position
