GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under direct supervision use a variety of tools and equipment to maintain grounds including planting cultivating spraying pruning and cutting plants trees shrubs grass and flowers. Determines the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds in good condition. Reports to the Grounds Supervisor/Director of Operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Cuts lawns.
• Trims and edges.
• Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
• Removes damaged leaves branches or twigs.
• Sprays lawns plants shrubs and trees with fertilizer herbicides and pesticides using hand or automatic sprayer.
• Conditions and prepares soils and transplants or plants seeds seedlings or bulbs according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area.
• Plants grass flowers trees and shrubs following sketches and designs when available.
• Waters lawns shrubs and flowers.
• Performs ground maintenance duties using tractor equipped with attachments such as mowers lime or fertilizer spreaders lawn roller and snow removal equipment and operates heavy power equipment.
• Makes minor repairs to mowers and other equipment and sharpens tools.
• Blows off parking lots and installs gravel where necessary.
• Turn in completed work orders daily if required.
  
  

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Uses and maintains equipment in a safe manner.
• Applies herbicides as directed.
• Works with other employees as helper when not functioning in the area of landscaping/yard work.
• Performs other related functions as directed by the Director of Operations.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school and two years of experience in landscaping or yard work; experience operating tractors and other landscaping equipment; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience that provides the knowledge skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to perform all related tasks including lifting and climbing as needed to perform the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as maintenance equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.

Other: May be required to be certified in use of herbicides.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Working knowledge of grounds keeping and elementary horticultural practices.
• Working knowledge of planting cultivating pruning spraying and trimming requirements of flowers shrubs and trees.
• Skill to transport tractors and other maintenance equipment.
• Skill to operate heavy power equipment.
• Ability to use sharpen and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations fire safety rules and regulations and threat and disaster procedures.
• Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
• Ability to follow simple landscape sketches and designs.
