Job Description

Women in Science Undergraduate Internship: Ancient Egyptian Imaging

The selected candidate will assist with processing xray CT scans of Egyptian mummified individuals and their coffins and recording the condition of the Dashur boat. You will learn how to work with CT scan data of mummified Egyptian individuals to isolate different regions of interest within the scans (segmentation) and digitally outline significant layers like the coffins wrappings bodies and skeletons. The work will contribute to a better understanding of past lives of ancient Egyptians and the practices of preparing their dead for the afterlife. The CT segmentation work may also contribute to interactive and interpretive presentations for Museum visitors to better understand the lives of these ancient individuals.

The selected candidate will also work with visible light scanners to make models of wooden planks from the 12th Dynasty Dashur boat excavated from the pyramid of Senwosret II and publicly displayed in the Ancient Egypt exhibit at the Field Museum. Work on the Dashur boat will help to guide potential conservation treatments facilitate research into the construction and historical significance of the boat and identify potential needs for display and stories for continued public exhibition.

This internship is intended for female and nonbinary identifying students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

Application deadline date: 4/25/25; Candidates will be chosen by 5/2/25; Interviews will be conducted by zoom.

Initial HR Orientation is on Monday June 16th w/full time hours of 35 per week starting on June 23rd 2025 July 31st. Salary of $17.50 per hour.
