The certified nursing assistant in acute care assists in the provision of nursing care of the patients as directed by the PCC/RN/LPN. Care skills include but are not limited to: comfort and safety measures personal hygiene assisting with activities of daily living and simple nursing procedures. When students are providing patient care treatment and/or services as part of their training any or all employees may be asked to work with and supervise the students.
Education/Experience:
None
Required Credentials (Licensure Certification or Registration):
Certification from a state approved program for nursing assistant or completion of inhouse certification program by the end of four months of employment. BLS required.
Employment Variables:
Normal working hours are twelve 12 hour shifts Sunday through Saturday including holidays. Occasionally may need to work beyond normal shift as the workload necessitates. May be exposed to communicable or infectious disease hazardous materials and injury from performance of assigned duties. Subject to multiple sensory and environmental stressors. Initial Tuberculosis (TB) test and drug screening is required by Winner Regional Health. Rubella titer will also be drawn upon hire and immunization is required if no past exposure or indication of immunization.
Required to wear name tag provided by WRH and to follow the dress code of WRH.
Job Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to read write speak and understand the English language. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to deal with people in a professional manner.

Clinical Competency
Demonstrates operating knowledge of equipment and supplies necessary to perform assigned duties. Demonstrates appropriate aseptic and hygiene techniques to prevent the spread of infection to patient self and others. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care. Assists Charge nurses and Physicians with assessments examinations and treatments.
Patient Care Functions
Assists in development and implementation of patients plan of care including personal hygiene nutrition and elimination. Observes patient reactions to treatments or any unusual conditions and records or reports adverse conditions to supervising nurse.
Patient & Work Safety
Demonstrates appropriate lifting repositioning proper use of restraints and moving of patients and equipment.
Working With Delegation
Willingly accepts from nurses the delegation of tasks that are within the job description and own competence level. Consistently seeks clarity and/or direction from nurse when tasks or assignments are unclear outside job description or outside the competency level. Seeks appropriate assistance when needed form healthcare team members to ensure the safe administration of patient. Consistently provides charge nurse with feedback regarding outcomes from delegated tasks (i.e. VS pain assessment activity). Demonstrates appropriate independence/interdependence in the provision and documentation of patient care.
Patient Safety
Ensures that all patients have the correct armband. Checks physician order with patients armband prior to medications treatments or procedures. Listens to the patient and follows up on concerns.
Transportation of Supplies and Patients
Checks at least two patient identifiers (preferably by asking patient to state name and date of birth and verifies the information by comparing two identifiers on patient ID armband) to match the correct patient with the correct procedure ordered prior to transporting the patient. Verifies patient by match of armband and chart. Seeks information from healthcare team important to the continued safe care of patient. (e.g. fall risk status infection control precautions code status etc.. This information is then accurately communicated to next provider(s) of care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs routine nursing care and treatment procedures in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assists the Patient Care Coordinator or Charge Nurse in implementing plan of nursing care while recognizing and responding to priorities in giving nursing care. Assists in admission transfer and discharge procedures including cleaning discharge units. Assists with post mortem care. Makes rounds anticipates patient needs and responds to patient call lights promptly. Reports any change in patients condition to Patient Care Coordinator / Charge Nurse in a timely manner. Adapts to change in workload or patient assignments. Assists in all areas when assigned to include ER ICU LDRP Nursery etc. Operates cleans and stores equipment properly. Recognizes limitations and seeks direction as necessary for performance of duties. Promotes open communication within the unit and with other units and departments. Respects patient right to privacy. Maintains a clean safe environment for patients and coworkers. Assists with orientation of new personnel. Performs appropriately in emergency / crisis situations. Is crosstrained to other areas/positions/departments to provide assistance when needed. Assists patients with bathing oral hygiene shaving makeup hair care and nail care. Provides back rubs assists with position changes and keeps skin clean and dry to prevent skin breakdown. Passes and sets meal trays feeds picks up meal trays observes and records appetite and oral intake encourages fluids and food as directed. Assists with bathroom using bed pan or urinal does perineal care measures and records bladder and bowel output. Utilizes bed rails appropriately and assures call light is within patient reach at all times. Provides timely and proper notification for absences and paid personal leave and finds a replacement when necessary. No unexcused absences or excessive tardiness. Settles differences with others in nonthreatening nonjudgmental fashion. Knows emergency procedures for fire internal / external disaster plans codes etc. and participates in drills. Verbally supportive of Winner Regional Health and the Sanford Health Network. Participates on committees and/or is involved in special projects of Winner Regional Health. Provides for patient resident employee and visitor safety through preventative measures. Identifies hazards and reports incidents.
