Statement of the job:

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks applicants to fill the position of Substitute Teacher. This position is responsible for assisting in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate preschool program in a childcare setting as well as assisting with the supervision of UMF practicum students interns and workstudy students. This position works closely with children families UMF students and faculty.

Essential Duties

  • Protects the safety of all children in the center and monitors children closely.
  • Communicates and interacts with children during care taking routines and free engagement time.
  • Manages the classroom effectively to encourage student participation minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Exhibits sensitive and responsive caregiving reading and responding to childrens cues and needs and facilitating independence and the development of selfhelp skills when appropriate.
  • Exhibits behavior management consistent with SweattWinter philosophy including recognizing and identifying difficult feelings redirection setting up the environment to minimize stress and conflict and positively reinforcing children while engaging positively with others.
  • Interacts with children during play activities both indoors and on the playground.
  • Treats parents and children with dignity and respect recognizing the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the population.
  • Adapts teaching methods to fit the needs of each student.
