Job Description

Position Overview: The Staff Attorney DV Specialist provides highquality legal advice services to victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking. The Staff Attorney works collaboratively with the Domestic Violence Advocacy Project (DVAP) at New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) and 603 Legal Aids Domestic Violence Emergency project DOVE to facilitate the full utilization of statewide resources and best meet prospective client needs. The Staff Attorney also works to collect and manage data for statewide planning and project evaluation purposes. The Staff Attorney works closely with and reports to the Legal Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Advocacy:

  • Provide thorough and accurate telephonic legal advice and counsel to victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking in the areas of divorce parenting minor guardianship civil protective orders and other family law matters;
  • Provide occasional direct representation to victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking in emergency family law and protective order hearings;
  • Identify and refer cases to NHLAs DVAP team to consider for placement; including developing case assessment documentation and referral and participation at biweekly case review meetings;
  • Collaborate with the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (NHCADSV) and area crisis centers to provide information and support to applicants current clients and advocates serving victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking.

Program Development and Evaluation:

  • Maintain accurate case data and submit to funders quarterly programmatic reports;
  • Participate in internal planning and systems process analysis to ensure efficient and highquality use of legal resources available to victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking;
  • Make recommendations to management and assist in implementation as needed;
  • Participate in planning and applying for funding diversification including supporting 603 Legal Aid grant writing and other fund development activities.

Community Involvement and Systemic Advocacy:

  • Participates in relevant task forces (e.g. Governors Commission on Domestic Violence Sexual and Stalking);
  • Participates in other local state and community boards committees etc. to address identified client/program issues and concerns;
  • Provides training to internal staff and external stakeholders about domestic violence sexual and stalking laws and the resources available through 603LA;
  • Cultivates and maintains collaborative working relationships with other agencies and organizations in civil legal aid;
  • Participates in projects that address systemic issues;
  • Performs related tasks consistent with skills and abilities and general responsibilities as assigned by the Legal and Deputy Director.

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school;
  • Active New Hampshire law license or ability to procure one within one year of hire;
  • Experience handling litigation and/or direct client representation;
  • Experience working with victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking including a working knowledge of traumainformed practice; Preference for applicants who have knowledge of scope of services available to victims of domestic violence sexual and stalking.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Sound professional judgment;
  • Excellent critical thinking and evaluation skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication competency with attention to detail;
  • Working knowledge of technology and the accurate collection and reporting of data;
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills;
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Office (Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Ability to easily integrate new technology systems and processes into work environment;
  • Must be able to demonstrate an appropriate manner and sensitivity in dealing with clients and applicants;
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative manner with diverse groups including internal and external stakeholders government agencies funders and other advocacy and community organizations;
  • Must have ability to develop and implement innovative models of service delivery with limited resources.

Compensation and Hours:

This is a fulltime salariedexempt position 37.5 hours per week). The anticipated salary for the position depends on prior legal experience expected to range from $67066.58 per year (for a candidate meeting the minimum qualifications described above) to $78626.27 per year (for candidates with substantially more experience).
