What You Will Be Doing

Mission and Culture

The DNR mission is To provide for the appropriate use and management of Alaskas stateowned land and water aiming toward maximum use consistent with the public interest.

The Survey Section provides surveying services to manage and maximize the use of more than 100 million acres of stateowned land. Boundary disputes easement vacations subdivisions and the development of state land all require the professional services of the DNR Land Survey Section.

Core Responsibilities

In this position you will have the opportunity to provide professional surveying services for the Department of Natural Resources Survey Sections Subdivision Unit.

This position provides support for the Subdivision Survey team within the Land Subdivision Contracting and Consulting Unit. This team helps identify projects designs site plans writes survey instructions and creates contracts for the surveying of new subdivisions to support the DNR Land Sales program.

In addition this position acts as the subject matter expert on section line easements and assists with the easement vacation process and Unorganized Borough replats. They also support other Sections of the Division and other departments or state agencies with survey related activities. Examples included writing legal descriptions performing area computations for lease agreements identifying the location of easements and assisting nonsurvey staff to understand survey requirements. Working knowledge of Geographic Information System databases and AutoCAD are a must for this position.

The knowledge skills abilities and competencies needed to be successful in this position include:

  • Technical experience performing boundary surveys subdividing land preparing plans of survey writing Survey Instructions and estimating survey costs is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Working knowledge of various local Platting Authority requirements including regulations and ordinances regarding subdivision of land zoning restrictions subdivision development standards and road design and construction standards.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with AutoCAD Civil3D ArcGIS and other common survey software.
  • Demonstrate communication and technical writing skills showing courtesy tact empathy concern and politeness to others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult hostile or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity race gender disabilities and other individual differences.

Minimum Qualifications

Land Survey Specialist 2 $2940.00

A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes 15 semester hours/23 quarter hours in survey related courses such as higherlevel Mathematics (e.g. analytic geometry plane geometry plane trigonometry or mathematics for land surveying) Surveying Fundamentals (e.g. plane surveying survey adjustments subdivision design technical writing for surveying or geodetic surveying) and/or Surveying Technologies (e.g. Global Positioning System photogrammetry Geographic Information System or Computer Aided Design) AND one year of survey experience at the professional level. The required experience includes work such as a Land Survey Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
An associates degree in Surveying Technology or an Engineering Technology such as Architectural Engineering Construction Engineering Drafting and Design Engineering or a similar field AND three years of practical progressively responsible survey experience of which at least one year is at a professionallevel.
OR
Five years of practical progressively responsible survey experience of which at least one year is at a professionallevel.
OR
Any combination of education in Surveying Technology or an Engineering Technology such as Architectural Engineering Construction Engineering Drafting and Design Engineering or a similar field from an accredited college and experience as part of a field survey crew (e.g. operating survey instruments preparing mathematical calculations locating traverse points and temporary bench marks checking survey calculations or similar duties) or other work requiring the ability to use and operate survey equipment or read and interpret plans deeds plats maps and survey descriptions equal to five years of which at least one year is at a professionallevel.

Special Note:
The term professionallevel refers to work that is creative analytical evaluative and interpretive in nature. While the Land Survey Specialist Land Surveyor and Land Survey Manager job class series all describe professionallevel work only the latter two class series describe work that requires registration as a Professional Land Surveyor.

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(c). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
