The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Bureau of Water Quality (BWQ) Division of Environmental Assessment (DEA) has a current vacancy for an Environmental Technician in the Marine Unit (Augusta office).

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will provide technical support for and implement the coastwide Marine Vegetation Mapping Program (MVMP) which includes delineation of seagrass and salt marsh vegetation. As part of this work the position supports field logistics completes field data collection operates vehicles and marine vessels trailers marine vessels assists with data management and analysis including GIS tasks maintains and repairs vessels and field equipment implements quality management and safety procedures and assists with development and dissemination of educational documents. This position additionally supports the Marine Environmental Monitoring Program Salmon Habitat Monitoring Program and Surface Water Ambient Toxics program within the Marine Unit.

This position will have flexibility to work remotely when work duties allow consistent with Department policies.

This position requires extended instate seasonal travel including overnights and work time on small boats.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Four 4 years of paraprofessional or technical experience training or education providing a basic knowledge of environmental programs OR an Associates Degree in Environmental Science or related field.

Preference will be given to applicants with the following knowledge skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of biological and ecological principles particularly related to estuarine and marine habitats
  • Ability to operate small boats including trailering launching and loading
  • Ability to collect and evaluate environmental data
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to use MS Office Suite and basic GIS software functions

Preference will also be given to applicants having a Bachelors degree in Biology Marine Science Oceanography Geography or other scientific technical or engineering discipline.
