Job Description

Position: Victim Service Worker (VSW) Justice

Salary: $40.03/hour

This position requires BCGEU union membership. Position PP: Unique: Grid Level 14 Step 1

Hours: 21 hours per week Oneyear fixedterm position with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.

Work hours fall primarily Monday Friday between 9am 5pm; may include some evening and weekend duties

Position Summary: The Victim Service Worker position is responsible for providing support and information to all women Trans Twospirit and Gender diverse survivors of sexualized violence. This position seeks to increase survivors safety and reduce further risk of victimization through knowledge empowerment and support in accessing and participating in criminal justice system. This position participates with local law enforcement crown counsel courts and communitybased organizations in coordinated integrated community responses to sexualized violence.

Job Responsibilities:

Under direction from the Manager of Direct Client Services the Victim Services Worker:

  1. Provides criminal justice system related support survivors of sexualized violence by:
    1. establishing a relationship of support and trust with the survivor;
    2. situating the survivor at the centre of decisionmaking processes about accessing services and involvement with criminal justice system responses;
    3. exploring the needs of the survivor in various realms (including medical counselling government programs criminal justice responses community agencies etc. and assisting in their understanding and access to these options through sharing information and providing referrals;
    4. supporting the survivor to articulate questions and/ or concerns about participating in the criminal justice system and access information in response to these issues;
    5. facilitating the survivors access to information about the status of police investigations protective orders outcome of court processes;
    6. assisting the survivor in the development and/ or maintenance of a safety plan which may include protective orders;
    7. assisting the survivor to develop strategies to maintain emotional regulation if/ when they are involved in making reports to the police or is involved in a court or other criminal justice system processes;
    8. accompanying the survivor to criminal justice system appointments (police reporting/ interviews interviews with Crown Counsel providing witness testimony in court and other criminal justice system related processes) as requested by the survivor;
    9. actively building relationships with medical and criminal justice system partners (the Forensic Nurse Examiners municipal police departments RCMP and Military police detachments the crown counsel office probation and parole offices and the Victim Safety Unit);
    10. coordinating services with VSAC victim service support workers and other Victim Services programs criminal justice system responses and medical services to provide integrated services;
    11. providing telephone and walkin support to survivors and to their friends and family.
  2. Provides information about the Crime Victim Assistance Program/ similar compensatory programs by providing forms facilitating communication when necessary and providing information about appeals processes.
  3. Provides information about and general support to complete Victim Impact Statements for primary court proceedings and parole hearings.
  4. Provides Access line support SART hospital accompaniments and immediate support to walkin clients as necessary.
  5. Participates in the training of Sexual Team (SART) volunteers and training provided to community partners.
  6. Participate as a committee member of Team Victoria (includes VSAC staff Forensic Nurse Examiners local police and RCMP Crown Counsel)
  7. Maintains accurate records of all services provided and prepares monthly caseload summary reports and monthly statistical summaries and other reports as required.
  8. Maintains a sound understanding of current community issues in order to appropriately identify and respond to the needs of survivors staff and volunteers.
  9. Monitors and remains current on all Victim Services policies and client services new trends legislation and court related information
  10. Maintains awareness of current issues in the field of sexualized violence through reading ongoing professional development consultation and other activities.
  11. Consults with the Direct Client Services Manager about services provided to survivors the impact on the worker and critical incidents (such as child abuse reports suicide assessments of any other breech of confidentiality) and unusual circumstances.
  12. Participates as a team member in regular VSAC team meetings case consultations and organizational training.
  13. Develops effective links and communication with relevant community agencies.
  14. Participates constructively as a member of the staff team with the Direct Client Services Manager and Centre as a whole.
  15. Performs other related duties as required.
  16. Provides training and mentorship to VSAC volunteers when required.


Qualifications

Education/Experience:

The position requires:

  • Bachelor Degree in criminology counselling social work or the equivalent skills and knowledge gained from related experience and training.
  • Training and experience in the criminal justice system and victim service work
  • Specialized training in supporting adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and sexual
  • Completion of provincial Victim Services training or Victim Service Elearning courses an asset
  • Criminal Records Check

  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and assess when consultation is needed
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate for the rights of survivors of sexualized violence
  • Ability to empower survivors to make their own decisions
  • Ability to set clear boundaries concerning parameters of the supportive relationship
  • Demonstrated ability to perform support skills for primary and secondary survivors of sexualized violence
  • Ability to manage crisis or emergency situations
