Description

Summary

This position is responsible for overseeing the Genealogy & Local History collection at Main Library and advancing the uses of this collection to area residents and nonlocal visiting genealogists. The individual filling this position will serve as a liaison to community groups professional organizations and other parties having interests in the areas of genealogy family history and local history. This position requires the planning and conducting of programs on a regular basis within and outside the Library as well as the active participation in community engagement initiatives in this subject specialty. The individual who assumes this position is responsible for assisting and instructing library users individually and in groups to use library resources especially in the areas delineated above. He or she will train other librarians about the resources of the Genealogy & Local History Collection so that assistance to customers can be provided in the absence of the Genealogy Librarian. The provision of regular reference service in the Specialized Services Department as well as sharing in the backroom work of that department is also a requirement of the position.

Typically oversees a program or subject area. Work is sometimes standardized and sometimes more varied. Employee knows and understands work requirements and completes tasks without direction. Employee has some independent decisionmaking opportunities. Requires judgment and interpretation of general instructions. Minimal level of supervision is provided generally for problem resolution. Provides training to other librarians but is not a direct supervisor.

  1. Regular reference work and backroom duties in the Specialized Services Dept.
  2. Creating developing/delivering genealogy & local history programs
  3. Liaising with local historical societies museums libraries and related organizations.
  4. Collection development routines pertaining to the Genealogy & Local History collections
  5. Training/orientation of librarians to the Genealogy & Local History collections and services
  6. Oversees subject/content/small location
  7. Provide mentorship training and support to clerks librarians peers and supervisors as needed
  8. Responsible for planning and executing training that meets system wide objectives in their subject area or audience.
  9. Responsible for scheduling events activities or services that meet the needs of the community within parameters set by a higherlevel supervisor or Administrator
  10. Participates in at least one systemwide or communityled initiative committee or partnership.
  11. Participates in at least 2 continuing education opportunities each quarter
  12. Provides at least one topical training for interested staff members annually outside of their regular onboarding training.
  13. Leads location or system wide activities initiatives or projects on an assigned or voluntary basis.
  14. May suggest and develop initiatives independently.
  15. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  1. Masters Degree in Library and Information Science is preferred OR Bachelors Degree combined with 5 years relevant library experience
  2. All basic level skills required of a Librarian 1 are essential.
  3. Superior skills and working knowledge in use of technology online resources and searching strategies used in the area of genealogy and local history
  4. Demonstrable aptitude for providing live online reference service
  5. Above average organizational skills to keep work current; excellent attention to detail
  6. Excellent public speaking skills required
  7. Must be outgoing and courteous with a strong commitment to service excellence
  8. Strong commitment to professional development 8. Strong commitment to embedded librarianship community engagement and outreach
  9. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information collect compile and prepare work documents and operate standard business office equipment.
  10. Travel to other library branches and community agencies and organizations is required.
  11. Majority of work is performed in but not limited to a general office/library environment.
  12. Availability for community outreach extended or nontraditional hours as needed to perform job duties.
  13. Participation and attendance at promotional events and offsite meetings is required.
  14. Able to reach bend climb squat lift 25 lbs. push up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.

Work Schedule

  • Must be willing to work days evenings and Saturdays (rotating shifts).
  • Must be willing to work at the various locations throughout our Mahoning County system.
  • Fulltime hours are generally 40 hours per week. Parttime hours are generally 24 hours per week with the option to work additional hours possible.
  • Travel to other library branches required occasionally.
  • Availability for extended or nontraditional hours as needed to perform job duties. Participation and attendance at promotional events and offsite meetings may be required at managements discretion.
