Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team within the Magna School of Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship. We are currently seeking a Skilled Trades Technologist Welding who will advise students in our welding shop classes through assistance and demonstration in the practical application of course theory.

They are responsible for installing maintaining repairing and troubleshooting mechanical and welding equipment and providing advice and recommendations to administration and faculty members regarding equipment consumables and special projects. This position is an integral member of the decisionmaking team to assist with the planning of curriculum development.

What Youll Be Doing

  • Developing lab exercises and overseeing student projects for the lab component in consultation with faculty.
  • Designing and implementing systems and procedures for demonstrating safe and correct operating procedures for equipment and hand tools. This includes demonstrating the proper use of welding machines horizonal saw shear plasma cutter brake press iron worker etc.
  • Preparing lab environment for scheduled labs (e.g. installs software setsup hardware ensures consumable materials are available student tool kits etc..
  • Providing technical advice and recommendations to administration and faculty regarding the purchase of equipment and consumables and makes appropriate decisions regarding purchasing within prescribed limits.
  • Installing maintaining repairing and troubleshooting equipment in welding lab and the virtual welding machines.
  • Preparing for events by leading a group of colleagues organizing event activities and/or participating in events
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

About You

You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to antioppression equity and inclusion.

You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present to diverse audiences and communities.

You enjoy balancing many different tasks staying organized and like to develop processes or systems to keep things running smoothly.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • Possess a trade certification for a Licenced 456A Welder and or 437A Metal Fabricator or an equivalent Certificate of Qualification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience working with MIG TIG and Stick welding and torch cutting
  • Proficient with using the Microsoft Office Suit (Excel/Word)
  • Demonstrated technical skills e.g. ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform repairs)
  • Knowledgeable of shop safety practices
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in design and development of safety programs and standard operating procedures
  • Knowledgeable and experienced with operating a variety of industrial machinery
  • Previous experience teaching/instructing students within an academic institution considered an asset
  • Experience specifying and ordering consumables specifying capital equipment purchases and tracking inventory overseeing junior employees (i.e. apprentices and/or students) managing deliverable projects and interacting with clients and customers is preferred.
  • CWB Certification is an asset
  • TSSA Certification is an asset
