Description

The Housing Department at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is currently seeking to hire temporary Skilled Crafts/Trades for the summer to assist with campus facilities. Current positions available:


Plumber

Salary:$50.11 per hour

SIUE Plumbers perform routine plumbing tasks and services to maintain a comfortable safe and efficient environment for faculty staff students and visitors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repair replace and install all plumbing fixtures and services to those fixtures (e.g. piping fittings valves etc..
  • Repair replace service and install heating and refrigeration units and gas appliances.
  • Uncrate and move plumbing equipment refrigeration units and gas appliances.
  • Repair and/or replace high temperature and chilled water lines.
  • Perform an assortment of plumbing tasks to renovated or new construction spaces for offices and/or instructional areas.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned in support of the department/universitys mission and goals. Plumber positions may be assigned to Housing or Facilities Management departments.
Painters/Tapers

Salary:$33.39 per hour

The Painter performs journeyman painting tasks to maintain a comfortable safe and efficient environment for faculty staff students and visitors to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with a variety of interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Make appropriate repairs or preparations as necessary and repair/replace all glass and glazing for windows and doors.
  • Refinish furniture and other woodwork as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned in support of the department/universitys mission and goals.
Carpenters

Salary:$44.87 per hour

Carpenters are responsible for performing carpentry work in all areas of the university and on all campuses (Edwardsville Alton and East St. Louis) while maintaining a comfortable safe and efficient environment for faculty staff students and visitors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repair and/or replace doors door hardware floors walls ceilings and roofs.
  • Uncrate/assemble new furniture and equipment for relocation; deliver furniture in accordance with prevailing agreements.
  • Repair furniture as needed.
  • Install interior and exterior signage.
  • Perform an assortment of carpentry tasks to construct new spaces for offices and/or instructional areas.
Construction Laborer

Salary:$35.38 per hour

Construction Laborers are responsible for cleanup after work in occupied spaces and buildings maintaining a clean and safe space for residents. Their ability to provide cleanup support in addition to other tasks is critical in maintaining work flow and repairing spaces in a timely manner for residents.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and construction of retaining walls.
  • Perform exterior drainage correction and excavation support.
  • Responsible for picking up materials from vendors unloading construction materials and delivering to respective job sites.
  • Responsible for layout pouring and finishing concrete; asphalt repair and sealing; tuckpointing and masonry repair.
Electrician

Salary:$49.67 per hour

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Repair replace and install all electrical wiring receptacles switches electrical motors and other electrical equipment requiring special wiring.
  • Install and replace interior and exterior lighting fixtures and lamps.
  • Perform an assortment of electrical tasks to renovated or new construction spaces for offices and/or instructional areas.
  • Repair replace and rebuild electrical and electronic controls and other specialized equipment.
Grounds Worker

Salary:$24.00 per hour

The Grounds Worker spends a substantial amount of time trimming dethatching aerating lawns and fields and seeding and sodding on all university properties. This position also maintains athletic fields/artificial turf marks boundaries paints team logos and removes trash/recycled material. Additionally the Grounds Worker assists with tree planting trimming of hedges shrubs and small trees and removal of dead damaged or unwanted trees as needed. They also help plant flowers trees and shrubs; water lawns trees and landscapes; and handle removal of nuisance animals.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Remove concrete/asphalt and debris while repairing and maintaining secondary roads/parking areas.
  • Clean streets walks drains catch basins and outdoor areas.
  • and mulch landscape beds.
  • Trash pickup around campuses.
  • Further duties and responsibilities may be assigned in support of the departments mission and goals.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Plumber

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Successful completion of a recognized plumber apprenticeship program or five 5 years 60 months) of fulltime journey level plumber experience.
  3. Possession of current State of Illinois Plumbers License.
  4. As required by position to be filled current license/certification consistent with vehicles machinery and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.i

Construction Laborer
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One 1 year 12 months) of experience in the use of tools and equipment commonly used by laborers in the construction trade (examples of equipment may include: air hammer concrete saw patent scaffolding trench digging equipment etc. and experience should include knowledge of asbestos removal/handling.
Electrician
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Electrician with a minimum of five 5 years 60 months) of actual work in the trade including apprenticeship or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Electricians i.e. installing maintaining and/or repairing electrical systems generators transformers motors and other electrical/electronic controls electrical switchboard and other apparatus utilizing electricity electrical electronic and direct digital control systems fire and alarm systems and associated electrical electronic and fiber optic equipment.

Grounds Worker
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or combination totaling six 6 months from the categories below:
    1. Coursework or vocational training in horticulture landscaping or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • Fifteen 15 semester hours equals six 6 months
    2. Work experience in grounds maintenance landscape maintenance nursery agriculture work grounds construction and/or tending to lawns turfs trees flowers bushes or other shrubberies ornamental plants and other groundsrelated work.
  3. Valid/current drivers license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicles(s) to be operated by the incumbent.

The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Workdays and hours may vary according to departmental Help employees do not receive SIUE benefits holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30calendarday break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days you may begin another 900hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with SIUE including your position on and Civil Service register. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment.
