Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under administrative direction Coach is responsible for planning administering and evaluating the overall operations of the NCAA Division I Softball Program to include but not limited to academic achievement of studentathletes recruitment of qualified prospects supervision of assistant coaches and other staff assigned to the program compliance program management (eligibility scheduling travel budget equipment) and studentathlete wellbeing. The Head Coach assumes full responsibility for ensuring that team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving postseason competition. Reports to the Director of Athletics or designee.
  • *Promotes the institutional position on intercollegiate issues as determined under administrative policy and procedures adopted by the University Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
  • *Provides leadership and oversight for the academic progress and eligibility status of studentathletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility retention and graduation.
  • *Organizes conducts directs and evaluates practices and intercollegiate competitions. Teaches necessary skills from basic fundamentals to techniques and strategies of team play to ensure studentathlete development. Directs the conditioning and training of studentathletes to ensure proper preparation for intercollegiate athletic competition.
  • *Develops and implements a recruiting program which evaluates recruits and selects qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically. Actively seeks and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assists them through the application process. Works collaboratively with the staff of the Compliance StudentAthlete Services and StudentAthlete Academic Services Offices to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner. Make recurring contacts by phone written correspondence offcampus visits and evaluations and coordination of campus visits.
  • *Recommends scholarship awards for studentathletes to the Athletics Director or designee.
  • *Oversees the academic progress and success of studentathletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility retention and graduation.
  • *Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical mental social and academic wellbeing of all studentathletes are a priority and prevents other influences that may interfere with their scholastic athletics or related interests.
  • *Promotes and fosters a positive team environment appropriate behavior and sportsmanship by team members assistant coaches and staff. Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field.
  • *Recommends budget and administers approved allocation.
  • *In collaboration with the assigned equipment manager oversees the selection purchase fitting and upkeep of team equipment.
  • *Exercises functional and administrative supervision for any assigned assistant coaches and other support staff to include their compliance with NCAA Conference and University rules and policies which govern the conduct of the Intercollegiate Athletic program.
  • Prepares data and reports as necessary in support of University requirements.
  • *Recommends future competitive competition schedule personnel financial and facilities requirements for Softball to the Athletics Director or designee.
  • *Arranges a competitive competition schedule as approved and coordinate travel arrangements needed in support thereof.
  • *Organizes and participates in clinics exhibitions and camps as approved.
  • *Confers with the Athletics Director or designee on personnel financial and facilities requirements for the sport program.
  • *Actively participates in fundraising promotional activities speaking engagements and alumni events as requested or approved for the sports program. Participate in public relations activities that strengthen the relationship between the University and the Community.
  • Builds develops and/or manages name image and likeness (NIL) initiatives in collaboration with UHMAD that benefits softball studentathletes.
  • *Per NCAA Division I Bylaw 11.1.1.1 or as amended the head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members who report directly or indirectly to the head coach. The head coach shall promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and shall monitor the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program who report directly or indirectly to the coach.
  • *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • *Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • *Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators staff and coaches in the department other college offices affiliated Conference offices and peers and appropriate relationships with members of the media donors and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
  • *Knows recognizes and complies with the laws policies rules and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advises the Athletics Director or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations whether by employees students or others have occurred or will occur.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree and three 3 years of experience coaching softball at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Knowledge and ability to organize implement and develop a successful softball program as played at the Division I collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically preparedDivision Istudentathletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings weekends and holidays
  • Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnicities sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Required to possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • First Aid CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer cell phone and social media technology competency.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Successful Division I softball coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and recruit the highly skilled studentathlete.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Division I sport specific program and NCAA rules.
  • Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawaiis multicultural society.
